Itinerary description

Accessible by skis or snowshoes, the Peter Grubb hut makes for an awesome remote winter camping experience. The hut is surrounded by several peaks that boast amazing views of the Tahoe basin. A winter season must do!

The Peter Grubb Hut is located below Castle Peak in Round Valley, 3 miles north of the Castle Peak trailhead near I-80.

Overnight parking is available at the California Sno-Park at the Boreal-Castle Peak exit on I-80. Park on the frontage road east of the Boreal Inn and walk back under the freeway to the trailhead.

Although only a short distance, the route is poorly marked by orange triangles mounted obscurely in trees at 100-200 yard intervals. The trail can be easy to lose. It is a good idea to have a GPS and topo map as backup.

Expect approximately 800′ of elevation gain to Castle Ridge. Once you reach Castle Ridge you can add a nice side trip by continuing the climb to Castle Peak. Depending on the snow conditions you may need ditch the snowshoes and boot-pack up to the summit.

The hut has a sleeping loft that accommodates 15 people and wood stoves and extra bunk room are on the ground floor. The fire wood is well stocked and there are usually pots to melt snow with. There is an outhouse a few paces from the hut.

Even if you are only visiting for a day trip, the hut makes for a scenic place to warm up and take in historic atmosphere.
