On the Rideau Canal
It was after the War of 1812 that the ideas for the construction of the canal began. Indeed, it allowed to have a navigable way between Montreal and Kingston without having to fear the attack of a British ship by the American army. The only existing one was on the St. Lawrence River which is shared between Canada and the United States.
The construction of the Rideau Canal began in 1826 under the direction of Colonel John By. This site is 6 years old and employs more than 2,000 men working in very difficult conditions, many of whom die of malaria.

Today, the Rideau Canal is only allowed for pleasure craft that can navigate between the Ottawa and Lake Ontario rivers. There are currently 46 locks in service along the Rideau Canal out of the 49 existing ones. Starting in January, the Rideau Canal becomes the largest natural ice rink in the world. In fact, the 7.8 km crossing downtown Ottawa is maintained by the National Capital Commission and allows skating in complete safety.
