Boat tour made on Monday, August 5, 2013
NOTICE: It is understood that anyone who wants to do this same route assumes the responsibility that an activity entails that is not exempt from possible risks or incidents, in an environment in which common sense and circumstances can make the difference between having a good day or the opposite.
Today we are going to the Kruger National Park, and since it catches us on the way, we have decided to have one last perspective of the Blyde River Canyon. We already have the view from the different viewpoints along the road, as well as from the beautiful route we walked yesterday. Well, we are missing the last perspective from below, and the only possibility to do it properly is by boat. Well, in reality it would have to be said from the barge that they have enabled an improvised mooring (African style) to be able to make a worthwhile tour. It should be noted that, although we are told that there are hippos in the area (last year, apparently, a female was seen giving birth) and some crocodiles, however, we did not see any, and what is worse, we did not have the feeling that there were any. . Needless to say, our desire to see them would be fully fulfilled in the Kruger, where hiccups, which call there, and crocodiles abound in any of the rivers, lagoons and ponds. At eleven past, the barge full of people (we will be about ten or twelve people in total) starts moving. We are sitting on those plastic chairs that are used in any of the terraces of a summer bar or beach bar. Come on, it is the most rudimentary, which does not detract from the charm and beauty of a walk of just over a couple of hours, to cover about nine kilometers in total. To highlight the zeal shown by the driver of the barge, who from time to time lets go of the rudder, to explain to us everything that is seen in our path. The truth is that if you come to this part of South Africa and go through the canyon only by car (which most tourists usually do) you lose one of the most worthwhile perspectives, along with the walk of course. we did the day before. We are excited to arrive by boat at the point where the Blyde and Kadisi rivers meet, and thus be able to see how far we walked down the day before, and where we went up. From here you can perfectly observe the complicated orography of the site and the logic that there are so few passable roads. The first section by boat is done heading southeast, to change to the south for the rest of the way, until we reach a beautiful corner where a lot of cormorants have chosen a dry tree to nest, in the same riverbed. Up to here the outward journey, along the left bank of the Blyde reservoir, to make the return much closer to the slopes of the canyon, along its right bank.
