Itinerary description

They started mining the pit in 1966 and stopped in 1978. Mining started again in 1994. They mine phosphate for fertilizer. It is currently 200m deep. This puts you 200m above sea level. In 30 years time it will be 641m deep. So if they continue to have the race you will eventually start below sea level. The road out of the pit is an 8% climb. You climb for the first 2.7km. The first water point is at 3.2km once you are out of the mine property. Unfortunately none of the monster trucks were in the pit when we started. They started coming in once we were out of the pit. The rest of the race is undulating through Phalaborwa. The turn a round point is at the place where a Marula and a Mopani tree have grown together. The last 900m are uphill to the finish.
Very enthusiastic water point helpers. The 21, 10 & 5km races all start at the bottom of the pit. They bus you down to the bottom of the pit from the finish venue.
A race worth doing especially if you combine it with a Kruger Park trip.
