Sierra Nevada: Los Machos y Veleta por las aristas (with English version)

¡Atención! califico esta actividad como MUY DIFÍCIL para senderistas o montañeros sin experiencia o con poca experiencia en escalada. Es muy conveniente hacerla guiado por un escalador que conozca la ruta o tenga la debida experiencia y con el correspondiente material: casco, arnés, cuerda, bagas, mosquetones de seguridad, cintas exprés, etc. Para escaladores, sin embargo, en ausencia de nieve o hielo y con buenas condiciones meteorológicas, la ruta ofrece poca dificultad técnica.

A tener presente que el track desde las Posiciones hasta Veta Grande está elaborado a mano por problemas con el GPS.

Partimos de las Posiciones del Veleta, tras haber tomado la lanzadera que sale desde el aparcamiento del albergue universitario “Sierra Nevada”, en la Hoya de la Mora. La lanzadera es gestionada por el llamado “Servicio de Interpretación de Altas Cumbres-Vertiente Norte”, que se mantiene en funcionamiento durante la temporada estival (https://andaltura.com/sierra-nevada/tresmiles-de-sierra-nevada/tresmiles-de-sierra-nevada-sector-central/veleta/servicio-de-interpretacion-altas-cumbres-sierra-nevada/). El recorrido dura unos 20 minutos y cuesta 6,60€.
Desde las Posiciones, nos dirigimos hasta la entrada del Veredón superior, a apenas unos metros. Descendemos el veredón hasta los Corrales del Veleta. En este punto, pasamos a escasos metros, de la entrada del túnel que fue excavado a principios del s. XX como parte del proyecto fallido de construir un tranvía que subiera a Sierra Nevada desde Monachil. La entrada se encuentra a nuestra izquierda.
Los Corrales del Veleta representan el nacimiento del río Guarnón, afluente del Genil. Seguimos los hitos que en el canchal de roca descienden hacia la zona de las Trancadas del Guarnón. Ahí, conectan con un sendero, que se va haciendo cada vez más marcado, que, en relativamente cómodo zigzag supera el pronunciado desnivel hasta Veta Grande. Este sendero continúa hacia Laguna Larga y el Collado del Ciervo, pero nosotros lo abandonamos en el precioso paraje de Veta Grande para iniciar el ascenso a Los Machos, por su arista norte. Así que damos comienzo a la parte técnica del recorrido, lo cual quiere decir que es el momento de equiparnos con casco y arnés, y preparar todos los “herrajes”.
La arista de los Machos tiene dos partes. La primera es bien sencilla, cuenta incluso con una traza fácil de seguir que no tiene ninguna dificultad técnica más que la pendiente. La segunda parte es otro cantar: es mucho más vertical, por lo que requiere ayudarse con las manos en varios puntos, tiene algún que otro pequeño destrepe y, sobre todo, debe extremarse la precaución porque la piedra está bastante suelta. No obstante, técnicamente, apenas ofrece dos pasos verticales de cierta complejidad que, con un poco de destreza, se superan sin dificultad. En principio y en condiciones normales, para gente habituada a terrenos pedregosos, no requiere el uso de cuerda. Nosotros lo hicimos lo más pegados posible a la arista y nos fue bastante bien. Pero hay incluso posibilidad de llevarla a efecto unos metros más abajo, por su vertiente izquierda, con menos exposición.
Los Machos, con sus 3327 m.s.n.m., es una excelente atalaya para tomarse un respiro y contemplar el sobrecogedor paisaje de la cordal de los tresmiles de Sierra Nevada. ¡Cuánta belleza! La cumbre del Veleta llama inmediatamente nuestra atención, por la verticalidad de su cara este, y algo de congoja se experimenta pensando que nos disponemos a subir estas vertiginosas paredes. Así que, una vez “supervitaminados y mineralizados”, continuamos la marcha.
Por un canchal alomado, descendemos cómodamente los Machos hasta situarnos al inicio de la arista del Veleta. La arista está formada por tres puntales con suficiente entidad como para tener nombre propio. Son, por este orden: Zacatín, Campanario y Salón. Nos disponemos a ascender a los tres consecutivamente. Sus caras estes son muy verticales y requieren el uso permanente de las manos, pero no tienen pasos complicados. Tienen buenos agarres y apoyos, y la roca está en muy buen estado, con lo que, si uno está acostumbrado a las trepadas, no representan más problema que la confianza en saber que uno no se va a caer. Sus caras oestes, por donde se desciende, están compuestas de andenes muy fáciles de transitar, sin apenas la ayuda de las manos más que en puntos excepcionales. Los puntales terminan en el collado del couloir de la cara norte del Veleta. Impresiona asomarse al canuto y apreciar su verticalidad, hasta los Corrales. El collado conecta con un cómodo vasar de apenas unos metros, que recorreremos, contemplando el esplendoroso escenario de la sur del Veleta, con la estampa del mar Mediterráneo en la lejanía. Lo andamos hasta que descubramos pintadas en la pared, en letras rojas, sobre nuestras cabezas, a unos tres metros, un tanto borrosas, las iniciales FF. Cualquiera que haya llegado hasta aquí sabrá lo que estas iniciales significan: estamos ante la famosa vía Fidel-Fierro, en honor a los escaladores Fidel Fernández y su compañero de cordada, Fierro, que fueron los primeros que abrieron la vía en los años 50 del pasado siglo. Decir que el padre y abuelo de Fidel, tocayos y médicos de profesión, como él, fueron de los primeros montañeros de Sierra Nevada y que contribuyeron a la construcción del primer refugio de montaña, el de San Francisco, recientemente reabierto. Así que de casta le venía al galgo.
La Fidel-Fierro es la parte más técnica de todo el recorrido. Tendrá unos 15 m de altura que nos conectará ya con la propia cumbre del pico. Es muy vertical, pero tiene muy buenos agarres y apoyos. Si eres un escalador, ya sea de clásica como de deportiva, la ascensión será “coser y cantar”. Si no es el caso, la subida representará un desafío, pero, si no se te da mal trepar, la superarás sin más problemas que mantener la calma y buscar bien los apoyos para manos y pies. Todo ello, en período estival y siempre que las condiciones ambientales sean óptimas (buen día, sin viento, roca seca, ausencia de nieve o hielo, etc.). La mayor dificultad es una pequeña chimenea de unos 5 metros en la parte más elevada, que impresiona por su verticalidad, pero, nuevamente, sabiendo encontrar los apoyos y con un poco de tranquilidad, se supera con relativa sencillez. Ni que decir tiene que si padeces de vertigo, es mejor ni intentarlo, pero, si ese es el caso, no habrías llegado hasta este punto. Si no te sientes con confianza y tienes la menor duda, lo mejor es utilizar la cuerda para este tramo y así ir más seguro (por tanto, no te olvides de llevar una cuerda por si acaso y alguien que sepa utilizarla). De hecho, en la chimenea hay un parabolt para ello. No obstante, son muchos los que lo hacen sin cuerda (ese fue nuestro caso). El casco sí que es imprescindible, no solo porque así evitamos que nos golpee alguna piedra, sino porque no es infrecuente que algún desaprensivo de entre las hordas de turistas que de seguro estarán en la cumbre del Veleta, termine echando basura por el tajo y te caiga en la cabeza.
Todo el recorrido desde las posiciones hasta Veta grande y, de ahí, a los Machos y el Veleta por las aristas y la Fidel Fierro, nos llevó unas 4h15´, con las correspondientes paradas.
Una vez en la cumbre, tras las felicitaciones, las fotos de rigor y un ratito de sosiego para recuperar el resuello, iniciamos la bajada por la loma del Veleta hasta la Hoya de la Mora, a pie, sin tomar la lanzadera.

Keep in mind that the track from the Positions to Veta Grande is made by hand due to problems with the GPS.

We start from the Veleta Positions, after having taken the shuttle that leaves from the parking lot of the university hostel "Sierra Nevada", in the Hoya de la Mora. The shuttle is managed by the so-called "Servicio de Interpretación de Altas Cumbres-Vertiente Norte", which remains in operation during the summer season (https://andaltura.com/sierra-nevada/tresmiles-de-sierra-nevada/tresmiles-de-sierra-nevada-sector-central/veleta/servicio-de-interpretacion-altas-cumbres-sierra-nevada/). The tour takes about 20 minutes and costs €6.60.

From the Positions, we go to the entrance of the upper Veredón, just a few meters away. We descend the veredón to the Corrales del Veleta. At this point, we pass a few meters from the entrance of the tunnel that was excavated at the beginning of the century. XX as part of the failed project to build a tram that would go up to Sierra Nevada from Monachil. The entrance is on our left.

The Corrales del Veleta represent the source of the Guarnón River, a tributary of the Genil. We follow the milestones that in the rock canchal descend towards the area of the Trancadas del Guarnón. There, they connect with a path, which is becoming more and more marked, which, in a relatively comfortable zigzag, overcomes the pronounced slope to Veta Grande. This path continues towards Laguna Larga and the Collado del Ciervo, but we leave it in the beautiful place of Veta Grande to start the ascent to Los Machos, by its northern edge. So we start the technical part of the tour, which means that it is time to equip ourselves with a helmet and harness, and prepare all the "equipment".

The edge of the Males has two parts. The first is very simple, it even has an easy-to-follow trace that has no technical difficulty other than the slope. The second part is another song: it is much more vertical, so it requires help with your hands at several points, it has a few small tricks and, above all, you must be extremely careful because the stone is quite loose. However, technically, it barely offers two vertical steps of a certain complexity that, with a little dexterity, are overcome without difficulty. In principle and under normal conditions, for people accustomed to stony terrain, it does not require the use of rope. We did it as close as possible to the edge and it went quite well. But there is even the possibility of carrying it out a few meters below, on its left side, with less exposure.

Los Machos, with its 3327 m.s.l., is an excellent watchtower to take a breather and contemplate the overwhelming landscape of the three-thousands mountain range of the Sierra Nevada. How beautiful!. The summit of the Veleta immediately catches our attention, due to the verticality of its east face, and some sorrow is experienced thinking that we are about to climb these dizzying walls. So, once "super-vitaminized and mineralized," we continue the march.

Through a hilly canchal, we comfortably descend the Machos until we are at the beginning of the Veleta edge. The edge is made up of three struts with enough entity to have its own name. They are, in this order: Zacatín, Campanario and Salón. We are about to ascend to all three consecutively. Their faces are very vertical and require the permanent use of the hands, but they do not have complicated steps. They have good grips and supports, and the rock is in very good condition, so, if you are used to climbing, they represent no more problem than the confidence in knowing that you are not going to fall. Its western faces, where it descends, are composed of platforms that are very easy to travel, with hardly the help of the hands more than at exceptional points. The struts end at the hill of the couloir on the north side of the Veleta. It is impressive to look at the joint and appreciate its verticality, up to the Corrales. The hill connects with a comfortable vasar of just a few meters, which we will travel, contemplating the splendid scenery of the south of the Veleta, with the image of the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. We walk it until we discover painted on the wall, in red letters, on our heads, about three meters away, somewhat blurred, the initials FF. Anyone who has come this far will know what these initials mean: we are facing the famous Fidel Fierro road, in honor of the climbers Fidel Fernández and his rope teammate, Fierro, who were the first to open the road in the 50s of the last century.

The Fidel Fierro is the most technical part of the entire tour. It will be about 15 m high that will already connect us with the summit of the peak itself. It is very vertical, but it has very good grips and supports. If you are versed in climbing, the ascent will be "sewing and singing." If this is not the case, but you are not bad at climbing, you will overcome it without any problem than to stay calm and look for hand and foot supports well. All this, in the summer period and as long as the environmental conditions are optimal (good day, no wind, dry rock, absence of snow or ice, etc.). The greatest difficulty is a small chimney of about 5 meters in the highest part, which impresses a little for its verticality, but, again, knowing how to find the supports and with a little tranquility, it is overcome with relative simplicity. Needless to say, if you suffer from vertigo, it's better not to try, but, if that's the case, you wouldn't have reached this point. If you don't feel confident and have the slightest doubt, it is best to use the rope for this section and thus go safer (therefore, don't forget to bring a rope just in case). In fact, in the chimney there is a parabolt for it. However, there are many who do it without a rope (that was our case). The helmet is essential, not only because this way we prevent a stone from hitting us, but because it is not uncommon for some unscrupulous person from among the hordes of tourists who climb the summit of the Veleta to end up throwing garbage down the pit and fall on your head.

The whole tour from the positions to Veta grande and, from there, to the Machos and the Veleta by the edges and the Fidel Fierro, took us about 4h15´, with the corresponding stops.

Once at the summit, after the congratulations, the photos of rigor and a little bit of calm to recover the breath and lower the pulsations, we begin the descent along the hill of the Veleta to the Hoya de la Mora, on foot, without taking the shuttle.
