Itinerary description
This GPS track includes part of the drive from Adwa out to the area of Mt. Semayata (first two photos). The hike portion starts at a parking area at the gate of a school. The trail up toward Mt. Semayata is pretty good until the terrain gets steeper and it becomes bushwhacking. There may be a way up toward the rock faces and possible climbing opportunities on Mt. Sumayata, but this track is not very promising.
Walking back toward the school, the GPS track shown here veers off to the north and to a new rock climbing crag (last 3 photos). The two new routes are: 1) Shekla Tibs (5.9), which is on the left side of the photo and first ascends up a right facing off-width crack to a ledge. Climb to another ledge and traverse right. First ascent was by Kelly Baumgartner with Aaron Tiffany. 2) Kerem, 5.7, was FA'd by Gebre Berhan and goes up the bushy line in the middle.
We explored this area with Gheralta-based guide Gebre Berhan. (Email: bahranw@gmail.com, cell: +251 914200720). Gebre knows climbing in this area, and does the cliff churches, trekking and camping around Gheralta. He did a great job so I recommend him.
