Dijle

Kasteel van Arenberg is a château in Heverlee close to Leuven in Belgium. It is surrounded by a park.

The site had been the castle of the lords of Heverlee since the 12th century, but this family became impoverished and had to sell the site in 1445 to the Croÿ family from Picardy. Antoine I de Croÿ demolished the medieval castle and started works to build the current château in 1455 on the site, of which he destroyed all but one tower. His grandson, William de Croÿ, completed the works on the château in 1515, and founded a monastery on the château grounds for the Benedictine Celestines. The architectural style is in large part traditionally Flemish, with sandstone window frames and brick walls, though it has been structurally altered since 1515 and has elements of Gothic, Renaissance, and Neo Gothic architecture. Its large corner towers are typical, once surmounted by a German eagle.

Church of Saint Quentin

Historically and architecturally, the foundations of the church of Saint Quentin are Romanesque. The lower part of the tower (about 1200) is the oldest part. The rest of the church was built around 1450 by Mathieu de Layens and is classed as high Gothic, Brabant style. The choir was completed in 1453 and the nave in 1535 but it was not until 1900 that the spire was added under the direction of the architect Langerock. Inside are 18th century stalls, several paintings by Josef Verhaegen and, in the north transept, “The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne” by Gaspar de Crayer. The organ (1786) by Van Peterghem comes from the College of the Pope, not far from Saint Michael’s church. A small anecdote: as the church is located on hill on Namur Street, one says of those passing on Sheep Street that “the living stroll under the dead”.

Groot Begijnhof Leuven

The Grand Béguinage (Groot Begijnhof van Leuven in Dutch) is not specifically a garden destination; however it is a quiet oasis in the centre of the Flemish city of Leuven. The Béguinage is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It dates from the 13th century and was a refuge for unmarried semi-religious women. These days the Béguinage is owned by the university and houses visiting students and professors. You can wander through the quiet cobbled streets and admire the small gardens and climbing roses that decorate the living quarters.

Chapel of Saint Antoine

The chapel of Saint Antoine (1617) on the Father Damien Square is known not only for the pilgrimages to Saint Joseph but also for the crypt of the Holy Father Damien (1840-1889).   Jozef De Veuster, born in 1840 in Tremelo, entered the monastery adjoining the square. This monastery is part of the congregation of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart (also known as the Picpus).   Father Damien, who devoted his life to the lepers on Molokai, was beatified in 1995. He was also proclaimed “The Greatest Belgian” in 2005 and  was canonised in 2009.  A permanent  exhibition in the chapel illustrates the story of his life.   The Damien centre (Sint Antoniusberg 5) is a documentation and meeting centre.   The chapel was enlarged and modernised in 1961-1962. Numerous votive tiles adorn the chapel of Saint Joseph.

Pope's College

Pope's College or Pope Adrian VI College in Leuven was a college for theology students at the Old University of Leuven, founded by Pope Adrian VI in 1523. At the suppression of the old university in 1797 the college became public property. It is now a hall of residence of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, rented from the city council .

The college, founded for Theology students at the University of Leuven in 1523, was considerably extended as early as 1530 and rapidly became one of the richest constituent colleges of the University of Leuven. After a building collapse in 1775, the whole complex was rebuilt to a classicist design by M. Ghenne.
