Itinerary description
One day Kokopelli Trail mountain bike race fully self supported on a singlespeed.
Started at midnight 5/30 at the Fruita Colorado trailhead and road straight through to the Moab Utah slickrock parking lot.
The race started in Moab the last couple years which I did it in 2009. This year on the actual race date the mud and snow forced all the single speeders out of the race. The typical gearing used worked out not be ridable with the mud and the walking just locked up both wheels every few feet. The consistency was just right that if you could ride it the mud would shed off the tires but it required a much easier gear than we had. So after the first climb it was unanimous that none of the single speeders wanted to deal with the mud the next 110 miles and the snow was not letting up so we headed back to Moab arriving at around 5:00am.
So as a redo a friend and I elected to go the opposite direction in a “timetrial” version. I liked this direction better but it was harder with all the major climbs at the end. The temperature was better with the night riding in the desert and the mountain section during the hottest time of the day.
Great ride!
