Drive Mt. Pilchuck road for about 1 mile. Pull out into a large gravel parking area. The trail starts on the opposite side of the road.

The trail leaves the more barren 2nd growth forest and enters stand of old growth.

Due to the hike's popularity, trail features such as this boardwalk have been installed to prevent severe trail erosion.

Arrive at Heather Lake. The trail comes to a Y. Take the trail in either direction, to be lead around the lake on a loop.

This is the location of a day use area, that sometimes doubles as a camping area. Camping at the lake is very limited.

Walk over another long boardwalk installed over a marshy area on the shores of Heather Lake.

A small scramble route leads uphill into the avalanche fields. Follow this route up to a series of falls cascading off Mt. Pilchuck.
