Itinerary description
Three days along the borders of the river Semois in the Ardens along the nicest places. One of the most beautiful GR routes in Belgium with a varying trail and climbs witch puts you to your limits. This guide takes you on a heavy journey along the Semois with many panoramic views, small trails, rock formations, typical villages, steep climbs and much much more.
Day 1: Mortehan - Bouillon: 31km
Height difference: +687m -779m
Starting point: Camping Les Ochay - Mortehan
Ending point: Youth hostel - Bouillon
Day one is the easiest of the three day hike, we start in the small town of Mortehan at the border of the Semois near Pont de Linglé at the camping site of "Les Ochay". From here we pick up the GR16 trail signs (red-white stripes) in the direction of Bertrix. We never leave the GR trail until we reach Bouillon so its just enjoying the views and trails.
Day 2: Bouillon - Chairiére: 29km
Height difference: +1226m -1370m
Starting point: Youth hostel - Bouillon
Ending point: Camping "Le Trou du Cheval" - Chairiére
Day two is the heaviest day of all so be prepared! Best is to start early in Bouillon so you'll have enough time to reach the campingsite in Chairiére. We pick up the GR trail on the bridge Pont de France in the center of Bouillon where the Semois flows. From here we do not leave the GR16 trail until we reach Chairiére to reach the camping site. The camping site is located close to the GR trail so it's not much of a detour.
Day 3: Chairiére - Membre: 10,3km
Height difference: +731m -923m
Starting point: Camping "Le Trou du Cheval" - Chairiére
Ending point: Membre
Day three is the day to return, we do not give up the GR16 trail yet. You'll hike further along the GR16 trail to Membre-Sur-Semois, there you can take the bus back to Menuchenet to head back to the starting point. But if your condition is still OK after day two, you might hike to the last village before the French border. After the short bustrip to Menuchenet, we hike from the busstop back to the camping "Les Ochay" where we started the first day (this part is not included and is optional).
Tips:
The three day hike is very long (30km a day!). First day is way good, second day puts you to the limit. Plan this hike good and look out for the places to stay, places to eat and get water, bus times, etcetera.
Also we advice you to buy the Topo-Guide de GR16: Sentier de la Semois with plenty of more information on the GR.

Dohan
Dohan, sometimes known as Dohan-sur-Semois, is a small village belonging to the municipality of Bouillon in the Belgian province of Luxembourg. Located in the southern Ardennes, it stands on the Semois river.
Château de Bouillon
Bouillon Castle (French: Château de Bouillon) is a medieval castle in the town of Bouillon in the province of Luxembourg, Belgium.
The castle
Situated on a rocky ridge above the river Semois, the château is actually on two sites. On one rocky spur there was a typical castle mound. In 1082, a second dungeon was built by Godefroid de Bouillon, who sold the estate to the bishop of Liège before leaving for the Crusades. The chateau was subsequently altered, particularly by Vauban during the period of French occupation; projecting fortifications, barracks, arsenal and a powder magazine were added. The dungeon was demolished in 1824, during the period of Dutch rule, to make way for further barracks, but the military site was decommissioned in 1853. It rapidly became a very popular tourist location. Monument and site listed (26-05-1975) Listed as an exceptional heritage site of Wallonia
Bouillon
Bouillon (French pronunciation: [bu.jɔ̃]) is a municipality in Belgium. It lies in the country's Walloon Region and Luxembourg Province.
Le Tombeau du Géant
The giant's tomb The Giant’s Tomb has been admired by many, including Victor Hugo and Arthur Rimbaud. The origin of the name is unknown, but this promontory, surrounded by a loop in the river Semois, is reminiscent of a vast tomb. The site owes much of its beauty to the sinuously-curving river, running around a couple of small islands and down the miniature rapids created by outcrops of rock. Grass fields colour the alluvial plain a gentle shade of green. However, man has also left his mark on this landscape, in particular through the Rivage mill, with its wildflower garden and the “forest museum”. Site classé par Arrêté royal (06-12-1976) et (24-05-1977) Repris sur la liste du P. E. de Wallonie

Semois
Bohan is the last village in Belgium the Semois runs through. It lies deep in the southeast of the province of Namur, 16 km as the crow flies northwest of Bouillon. The parish church (1760) is a beautiful building. The Lourdes Grotto on the left bank of the Sambre, just downriver from the village, is a faithful reproduction of that of Lourdes. On the square stands the Maison du Marichau. This building has a timber framing. Just north of the village, you find 177 hectares of unspoiled nature.
Saint-Fiacre
Het gebedsoord "Saint-Fiacre" is gelegen in Vresse-sur-Semois.
