Itinerary description
This day was our last on the AVP. It is a relatively easy stage with the final part on level tractor tracks until the descent on asphalt road to San Pellegrino in Alpe. I recommend that you find the direct trail (not part of the AVP, it seems) from Giro del Diabolo to Pellegrino, thereby avoiding the asphalt road. From what I remember there is a trail sign close to the rock pile. I had read great things about SPiA but as it turned out it is a small, pretty town where all commerce is geared towards tourists who come and enjoy the view, the museum, and the church and leave. We found none of the hospitability of, say, the Lago Santo refugio, in the Albergo Ristorante L'Appennino. Anyway, the view from the town square over to the Apuan Alps is fantastic and we had a good night's sleep in the Albergo. From what I understood there is a Giro d'Italia stage which goes throughh both SPiA and Abetone and we saw many tour bikers on the road through the village. There is a bus, at 9:30am, leaving for Castelnuovo di Garfagnana where there are train connections.
