VELEBIT

Velebit is the largest mountain range in Croatia, around 145 kilometres in length and 30 km in width, and spreading up to 10 km south.
The value and beauty of nature on Velebit have long been acknowledged and the entire range was included in 1978 in the world network of biosphere reserves within the UNESCO programme of Man and the Biosphere (MAB) or the wealth of plant and animal species and mushrooms, the variety of karst forms and the landscape are reasons for which this mountain range was included in 1978 in the world network of biosphere reserves within the UNESCO programme of Man and the Biosphere (MAB).

Velebit is the ideal destination for all those who give the precedence to an active vacation and spending time outdoor. There are many marked mountain trails on Velebit. Along the entire mountain range there are more than 20 climber’s lodgings, and shelters for the accommodation of mountaineers.
The peaks of North and Central Velebit, from Zavižan and Baška Oštarija are connected by the 57km-long Premužić Trail named after its designer and builder Ante Premužić (1889 - 1979). It was built from 1930 to 1933. The trail is protected since 2009 as Croatian cultural heritage.
The entire mountain range area is a protected nature park, and North Velebit and Paklenica are national parks.

Hi, how is the road/trail at the beginning, from sea to the top? What surface? We are thinking about cycling it!

We have road bikes, and are actually interested just in the uphill bit to Kuca Alan and then down towards Krasno Polje, some people told us it's asphalt for the most part

Alan hut - Krasno polje It's mostly asphalt. Gravel road is only Alan hut - Mrkvište, cca 10 km, rest is asphalt.
If you want more gravel road, you must to go across Zavižan. Alan hut - Zavižan - Oltari - Krasno Polje.

The trail is not accessible from a certain point because there is a barrier there.

So are you still allowed to go there? Is it a natural barrier or do you mean like a sign that says that driving is prohibited?

First things first: I did this Trail in reverse!

The barrier (km 33,2 viewed from the right direction)(which is not a natural barrier) was open but a sign said going through was prohibited (there was also something in croatian language which i could not look up because I had no connection ). But for me it wasn't necessary to go through there because the trail led me to a dead end (and there was also no other realistic or obvious way) and I had to look up a way arround which was pretty easy, you just have to take a look at the map.

Most of the track was just gravel, you can do it with a normal car too (i say that because there actually were normal cars).
The last few Kilometers were assphalted but pretty narrow if someone comes from the other direction.
And be careful: Heavy trucks, loaded with a lot of wood can come towards you in the first part! (If you drive it in reverse)

Over all I would recommend it to anyone because of the really nice view.

    greetings

Super track, thank you. Only one small modification needed, one short part was closed with barrier, but easy to find a detour.

War heute da. Geländereifen machen Sinn, etwas Bodenfreiheit auch. Geht aber alles auch mit normalem PW. War sehr schön. Sehr einsam. Und fast immer ohne Handy Netz. Ein Teil war gesperrt, konnte aber einfach umfahren werden, einige km später gings zurück auf die Route. Das war zwar Wegpunkt 3 und 4.

This trail can not be done between 15.11 and 15.4. There is a no Entry sign with these dates at the begining. First I ignored that :-D but had to turnaround anyways becouse there was still lot of snow up in the mountains.

You can or this trail
