The Van Zyls Pass is also to handle for off-road drivers only in east-west direction. Away from the few main connections are needed to drive on the roads four-wheel vehicles and GPS navigation. A better alternative route leads from Okongwati to the Epupa Falls. This route can only be traveled at low speed.

Great trail in wild Kaokoland. You need to be totally self sufficient, have an extremely wellprepared 4x4 and know how to drive it. Preferably don’t go solo. The pass is steep and if you break your vehicle, you are in a world of hurt. The closest recovery is in Kamanjab, some 300km distant through remote desert. There is a Toyota carcass at the bottom of the pass from somebody who didn’t make it.
