Itinerary description

I did start to record at Tzelefos Bridge, that is very well known so best starting point.
Road just magnificent and with little care works with all cars not just 4x4 vehicles able to make it. Valley just awesome and if you are lucky and drive slowly in silence you able to see Muflons especially at morning and evening. At Winter season when river is more loud more easy to chase Muflons they not hear noise of the vehicle.
I left the car at the beautiful old Church, there is plenty of space to park the car and did continue my discovery on foot.
Village is very beautiful charming village. Worth to go and hang around there a few hrs.

Mylikouri is a pure Greek village, built in the mountainous area of Troodos at an altitude of 800 meters.

The village is built near the Monastery of Panagia Kykkos. Administratively, Mylikouri belongs to Nicosia, and belongs to the geographical region of Marathasa. Religiously, Mylikouri belongs to the Metropolis of Kykkos and Tillyrias.

The history of the village of Mylikouri:
According to historical evidence, the village of Mylikouri existed from medieval times and was a royal feud. Marathasa in the Middle Ages was divided into two great feuds. Count of Edessa and Count of Riga. Mylikouri belonged to other neighboring villages in the second feud, Count of Riga.

The name of the village of Mylikouri:
As to how the village was named, there are several versions. According to the first, the name of the village came from the bayberry (μυρίκη) plant which abounded in the area. The "Ρ" in the greek spelling was replaced by "λ" and was named Mylikouri, so it is written as Mylikouri.

According to a second version, it is said that the village was created by residents of the villages "Milon" and "Kourion". The remaining inhabitants of these villages, which were destroyed as the tradition says, due to their massacre by the Karamanian Turks, moved to the area that today (2018) is the village and named it by uniting the names of their villages. This version is said to be unfounded because the village exists on medieval charts and does not appear to have been created during the Ottoman domination.

Another version reports that the village had a special connection with the monastery of Panagia Kykkos. According to Ephraim the Athenian, the Emperor Alexios Komninos during the 11th century gave the villages of Milon and Kourion as well as the village Peristerona to the Monastery. From these villages during the Frankish occupation, Peristerona was removed from the monastery's estate, while the other two were united and made into Mylikouri.

Sights of the village of Mylikouri:
In Mylikouri you will find the church of Agios Georgos, the Monument to the missing persons of the community and the monument in honor of the dead during the liberation struggle of EOKA.
