Itinerary description
6 days tour from Martigny (Switzerland) to San Remo (Italy). (Part 1 to 3). Beginning of August. Total of about 1100km distance, 30000m of hight gained, about 400km of gravelroads, with all off-road highlights of the western alps. All doable, not dangerous, except for one part: Cuccumelle (very steep, open terrain, wet grass) was hard on my long/heavy Landcruiser GRJ78 with standard wheels. Otherwise enjoyable and easy.

Hi Konrad, nice route! We're planning to drive your route first week of september but 1 car is wider that 2m. On the sign it says smaller then 2m but he is 2.3m wide. You passed something that narrow? Looking forward to your answer!
Hi Rob. I am german speaking, but since I did the docu in english and you asked in english: I dont think that 2.3m makes all the difference. I saw even MB 4x4 Minivans that must be even wider. If the vehicle is not to long, then I dont see a problem. My Landcruiser GRJ78 is quite long, so I had to back up in maybe 100 cases in total during the trip. So not so many. I would go for it. And there is always a way back.... Have much fun. It it definetely worth it. I am totally enthusiastic about the experience. There are a few things to prepare though: some of the tracks have opening times, closing times during the day/night, some are closed certain weekdays... I had to skip one pass in the Montblanc region and went around, because I did not want to wait 5 hours or so for the pass to open. When I came to Tende yesterday to drive up to the Via del Sale, I found out that the construction on the Tende tunnel has the access road closed expect for 7:00-7:15 in the morning and 20:00 - 20:15 in the evening... Also I did not want to wait half the day. But because of that I found the way around (From St. Dalmatio to Triora) that is even more interesting, and almost all on gravel. So I got lucky. But check the opening times. For Via del Sale, you should also best buy an online reservation in advance. They limit the number of cars that can use the track per day. Also there, I got lucky: I did not have a reservation and the contingent was used up for the day from the Limone side. But because I had gone around on the south side towards Biaggio Alto entance, there were still tickets available.... Also it led the the fact that I did the entire via del sale back and forth (which is allowed within the 20 Euro ticket).
