Itinerary description
Fauvillers - Bastogne
This trail takes you on the exact same route which general Patton took in the winter 1944 with the US 3rd Army, to liberate the besieged city of Bastogne.
On this trail there are many points of interest (POI) where you will find tables with a lot of interesting information about the offensive, even a field artillery, a bunker and a General Patton Memorial.
The best time to drive this trail is during winter time, as it was the grueling cold and snow which made it so difficult for the soldiers of the 3rd Army to liberate Bastogne. You will also be able to enjoy the beautiful and calm landscape of the Belgian Ardennes and the quite small farming villages, which did not change a lot since the end of the war.
This trail consists of mainly asphalted road, the original trail is all asphalt and is drivable with every vehicle. As I love off-roading I added a small offroad section to it, which did require in my case low range and rear locker, as I drove it during winter with a lot of mud, but as already stated this part is easily avoidable. Just go left instead of right ;).
It took me 40min-1h to drive
As this trail ends in Bastogne I strongly recommend you visit 1st the city it's self, then 101st airborne museum, the Bastogne War Museum, the Bastogne Barracks and the Bois Jacques.
DISCLAIMER:
Off-roading is sadly more and more illegal all around Europe, this also applies to Wallonia in Belgium.
So be mindful and respectful to other users of the forest especially nature itself.
All my trails which I publish here are to be used only at own discretion.
Tipps:
Drive during weekdays, outside of school holidays and especially outside the hunting season (autumn - winter)
