Itinerary description
Moderate 4x4 trail on a narrow shelf road and used as a short-cut between Silverton and Telluride. Be sure to follow the detour signs around the town of Ophir. The locals frown upon non-residents passing through the town.
The trail is quite narrow at points especially west of the pass. Passing an on-coming vehicle is a challenge and may be intimidating for non-experienced drivers. A short-wheel-base 4x4 with high clearance is strongly recommended. Expect steep drop-offs and rocky sections with some tight switchbacks.
The views are outstanding. It's wise to check the road conditions since snows can linger into early summer. This is a fun must-do trail if you are in the Telluride/Silverton area.
