Monument Valley is within the Navajo Native reserve and it is they who manage this place. In addition to stores with samples of their crafts, they offer Jeep tours through the park, and we decided to hire one.
Our guide drives through dusty roads to get closer to the most interesting formations in the area. It stops the Jeep and gives us explanations about its geological origin and the imaginative names with which the first settlers were baptizing each of these monuments, the two mittens, the elephant, the three sisters ...
It takes us to a "hogan", a traditional Navajo house, where a woman shows us the old artisan techniques that they used to make different utensils, jewelery or hairstyles.
After this stop, it takes us further into the desert to show us several interesting formations. The first is a large arch called "Ear of the Wind", to reach it you have to climb a sand dune. Then it takes us to the "Eye of the Sun" where besides observing the hole in the shape of an eye we can see petroglyphs from the ancient Anasazi village. The last formation we visited is known as the "Big Hogan Rock". It is a large cavity in the rock in the form of a cave and in its dome there is a hole through which the sun enters. Inside, refugees from the scorching sun, the guide tells us some stories of the Navajo culture, and even sings an old song to us.
To finish the tour, we stop at John Ford Point. It is a point dedicated to the film director, who chose this place to shoot his most famous westerns.
