Itinerary description
The trail starts off CR-2 near the ruins of the town of Eureka below the ruins of the Sunnyside Mill. The road climbs up behind the remains of the mill. About a mile from the start look for a spur road on your left. This road follows the South Fork of the Animas and dead ends at the remains of the Midway Mill. Returning to the main trail, turn left and begin climbing above Eureka Gulch, eventually emerging above tree-line. The views are spectacular
At the end of the road are the remains of the Sunnyside Mine and where Lake Emma was. In 1978 the lake broke through into the mine and emptied, filling the tunnels with mud. Today only a bowl where the lake was remains.
On your way back down, look to the right where there is a photogenic view of a tram station perched on the side of the mountain.
