Itinerary description

The present itinerary substantially covers a visit to the Hovsgol lake starting from Murun. This can be achieved by the A1101 road, which was undergoing substantial improvements in 2011 - it could even be asphalted at the time of writing. As far as I know, the border with Siberia is closed and thus it is not possible to achieve a gorgeous combination Hovsgol - Bajkal, two lakes which are so similar in their shape and origin.
Peculiar of the track is that it does not start in Murun, but also encompasses the final stretch of our previous day, when coming from Ulan Uul we visited, close to the shore of Erhel Nuur, a very remote site of deer stones. This happened due to the prowess of our Mongolian guides - Latoya, whom you see in several pictures, and the Uaz drivers who indifferently rode on gravel or on open meadows.
Other notable features included here are the followiing:
- Uushigin Uver, a more accessible deer stone site not far from Murun;
- the Mogoi Mod, a very special tree not far from Hatgal. It has grown with an unique spiral shape;
- Jankhai Nuruu, an exquisite viewpoint over Hovsgol which is absolutely worth to reach. From here the view reaches the border with Siberia, which unfortunately remains closed, such it is not possible to concatenate the Hovsgol lake with its larger brother, namely Lake Bajkal...
