Itinerary description

DAY 5 - Vík to KEF

Today we started the day going to the Skógafoss waterfall, this one is pretty amazing. After this, we were planning to go up Eyjafjallajökull and see the new craters from last eruption Magni and Móði following a track we found on Wikiloc. But apparently, so many people were going up a track (owned by a grumpy farmer) that he got fed up and put a lock and a gate. From now on, only "icelandic specialised companies" can go up there. After dealing with the farmer for more than half an hour, we lost hope and just improvised a little that day.

We went back a few kms and took a track that went up and up the mountain to the glacier. We followed it until there was no more road, and ended up stopping because the stones were getting too big. From there we walked a little up the glacier and with some garbage bags on our butts we raced down the glacier, that was pretty cool... After this, we went down back to the Ring Road and west towards Seljalandsfoss. This waterfall is pretty cool, you can even go under it. From there, head to Reykjavik to drop off any camping material if you rented anything. Eat along the way whenever you are hungry.

After Reykjavik head to KEF but before getting there, take exit to Blue Lagoon. There was SO MANY people there... we were not happy when they told us it was 35€ each. So we went through the "service" door in the parking, parked the car in the staff parking and sneaked in the building through the "only for staff" corridors, people looked a little confused when they saw 5 guys with red jackets in there, but thankfully no one said anything. Once inside the building, we realised we were in the bar. Good news is we jumped all the que outside, bad news was we were in the Bar, were people wait to be called in to pay for the ticket... so just another "queue" but they have food around so you can buy. After seeing this, we left... cool place, but not for us. Pay if you want, it looks cool, but you'll be bathing with a 1000 people there, and btw the blue lagoon is not "natural", it is the "waste" they take out from underground in the thermal station that is next to there. It is not toxic or anything, but the blue lagoon is not man made, which is what everyone thinks.

After the Blue Lagoon, we went to Reykjanesbær, the town on the side of the airport. We went to Domino's, took some big ass pizzas and drove to the fishing port, where we ate on the rocks while seeing the fisherman come back ashore. From there, airport and wait for the flight home. Thanks for reading!

Welcome to Iceland petrocampers, this is the trip @petrocamp prepared and did on Sept 2015 for 5 days with a Land Rover (super)Defender. We used the app MOTION-X GPS to navigate, it is what works best for us (if you have an iPad Mini [Wifi+3G] it’s a kickass combination). Hope this helps you plan your trip to Iceland!
