Itinerary description

DAY 4 - Grafarkirkja to Vík

Long day ahead (many tarmac kms). Start day driving towards the Ring Road and take a left. From here, it is mainly tarmac today. Fill the car up in Kirkjubæjarklaustur if you need to (recommended). Keep going left until Skaftafell, where there's a big waterfall. Then go to the glacier named Hvannadalshnúkur and have a quick look. After this, down south east to the Glacier Lagoon in Jökulsárlón, icebergs get formed here... From the glacier, they go out to the sea. From here, back through where you came from and fill the car up again in Kirkjubæjarklaustur and have lunch there.

Second part of the day, drive towards Vík. Just after passing the town, take the road that goes up the hill (4x4 only). Go up up up and be amazed, it is one of the most beautiful places we've ever seen and we were alone (no one goes up there, everyone stays down). Take some pics up there and go down the other side (tricky bit, not recommended without 4x4) to Reynisfjara where you see all the beach and a view of Dyrhólaey.

After this, drive to the DC-3 Plane Wreckage, cool place but too touristic... I didn't know everybody knew that was there :( but you still have to see it for yourself. After that, we camped 100m from there near the river. Auroras by night, a lot of them, it was amazing! We went to the plane to take some pictures and then back to camp and sleep.

Welcome to Iceland petrocampers, this is the trip @petrocamp prepared and did on Sept 2015 for 5 days with a Land Rover (super)Defender. We used the app MOTION-X GPS to navigate, it is what works best for us (if you have an iPad Mini [Wifi+3G] it’s a kickass combination). Hope this helps you plan your trip to Iceland!
