Itinerary description

A nice trail through the French countryside along the Luxembourg-French border. Alongside the trail you will spot a variety of old WWII bunkers from the Maginot Line, marvelous Villages and ending close by the Cattenom nuclear powerplant. Highlights are: Aumetz mine museum, Rodemack medieval town, Lac du Mirgenbach, Ouvrage Kobenbusch and many more.

The trail consists of 65% dirt road, 25% paved road and 10% true offroad. I drove the trail during a prolonged dry season (1 week no rain), I still encountered some mud, nothing to difficult, 4x4 sometimes needed but still there were some deep ruts, adequate ground clearance needed. I imagine during a more wet season you should really be prepared for mud. I had absolutely no difficulties with my lifted (2.5") Jeep Wrangler and BFG KM3.

I took me about 5h with some small stops.

Disclaimer: Not all of the sections are 100% legally drivable, these sections can be circumnavigated.

Nice track, beautiful scenery and the occasional deep ruts that require attention and decent ground clearance. I encountered little mud in August, but from the tracks I could see that in wetter weather mud could be an issue. Some bits have sharp rocks, so AT tires are recommended.

The bunkers are cool BUT PLEASE BE AWARE: at the Casemate de Route d'Ottange Ouest I stepped on a rusty iron spike that was hidden in the tall grass! It pierced my foot and left a nasty wound. Upon closer inspection, a field to the west of the bunker was full of these spikes! Besides, the bunker was inaccessible due to heavy growth of thorny bushes.

Besides a possible bout of tetanus, the track is pretty cool. My son and I enjoyed ourselves quite a bit!

Thanks Josh for the trail. We did it this weekend in fairly dry weather. I have a disco 3 modified for overlanding and it was fine. I did fit some mud tyres which may have helped during one patch through the woods (really fun). No issues with getting stuck or anything, although in winter it might have been a bit trickier in places. We noted the spikes hidden in the grass at one of the bunkers and decided not to push our luck by pushing through all the undergrowth to visit. It is worth noting that in the woods near the power plant the trails are now closed off and barriers padlocked. We were able to find an alternative route around in both cases we came across. We were flagged down at one point by an irate French dog walker who accused of us of going around a barrier (we didn't) but he just puffed his cheeks and we went on our way. At another part a tree had fallen blocking the path, we could have cleared it with the winch but it was easier to just take a small detour around it.

A few of the routes are signed for agricultural vehicles only but we passed quite a few farmers who just waved at us and we continued on our route.

Overall it was great and our first wikiloc trail but definitely not our last!
