3rd Stage: Ramlat Wahiba - Bar Al Hickman - Sugar Dunes

Track: 214 km of which:
114 km of Wahiba sands
93 km Plains round trip to Hickman Bar
17 km Beach from Khaluf to Sugar Dunes

Total time: 9:23 h.
Moving time: 6:43 h.

This third stage of GAMSB22 was planned as "the queen stage" of the trip. In the previous months we had been investigating the entire area of the immense Wahiba sandy area, with an area of more than 10,000 km2 (100 times larger than the Erg Chebi in Morocco), looking for references to cross it from north to south. The Wahiba has the particularity of being a desert formed by valleys between large banks of longitudinal dunes, so most of the 150 km journey to cross it from north to south passes along a sandy but firm track. However, the track we decided to take for this first foray is a route that appears in the OMAN OFF-ROAD guide, so within the complexity of making such a long journey all through sand, it seemed a priori to be a place where there is usually road traffic with some frequency. We were equipped with two slings, a shovel, sand plates and a compressor to deflate and inflate tires for whatever might happen, but in the end, the Wahiba stretch turned out to be a spectacular track, which on many occasions was a true "desert highway." . Only a couple of slopes of loose sand dunes must be overcome but without major complications. Along the way we found several herds of dromedaries grazing freely, a couple of Bedouin tents and, most surprisingly, a large mosque in the middle of nowhere 50 km from the nearest road.

Arriving at the asphalt in the fishing village of Qahid, we stopped to inflate tires with our compressor. It took us less than 3 hours to cover the 114 km of sand tracks, taking it very slowly, making several stops along the way. We now had to travel about 90 km of road to the gas station in Mahout, and as we had plenty of time we decided to visit the Bar Al Hickman, a strip that forms a sand bank, a paradise for kite surf lovers and which is nicknamed " The Maldives of Oman". To get there there were 45 km of track, mostly through dry lagoons and large plains that delighted the drivers. The site is well worth it, it is an authentic Indian beach with the typical white sand of the coral reefs.

After the swim and the refreshment, we again traveled the 45 km of plains to the asphalt and went directly by road to our final objective of the day, the white dunes of Khaluf nicknamed "Sugar Dunes". Before, we made a stop at a fishmonger in Mahout to buy two 2kg Urtas to cook over charcoal for dinner.

We arrived in Khaluf already at sunset. We wanted to have stopped at the Humrat cave but it was already getting dark and we wanted to set up camp with light. The last moment of the day with the sun setting was walking the 17 km along Khaluf Beach and the track that leads to Sugar Dunes Beach.

First camping trip of the trip, at the foot of the large white dunes with the sound of the sea in the background. A little breeze but a very pleasant temperature of 25º. A magical night that gave us a true spectacle of nature, seeing the breaking waves perfectly illuminated in the darkness of the night by bioluminescent algae, a brutal experience!

Called in Arabic "The Holy Mosque of His Majesty" the Sultan Qaboos. It appears to be a recently built mosque. The place is enigmatic due to its remoteness from any road connection, the closest being more than 50 km away.

On the way to Hickman's Bar there were stretches of large plains through what appears to be land that may have been flooded at times by spring tides as there were dry corals in the gravel.
