SMOKE SAUNA (Sauna de humo)

The Finnish sauna is a substantial part of its culture. For Finns, the sauna is a place to relax with friends and family, and also a place for physical and mental relaxation. Finns think of saunas not as a luxury, but as a necessity. The saunas are located on the shores of Finland's numerous lakes, in private apartments, central offices, in the House of Parliament and even at a depth of 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) in the Pyhäsalmi mine. The saunas are strictly egalitarian places: no titles or hierarchies are used in the sauna. When the heat begins to feel uncomfortable, it is customary to jump into a lake, sea or pool, or shower. In the winter, roll in the snow or even swim in a hole cut in the ice of the lake. After cooling down from the first bath, one returns to the warm room and begins the cycle again. The number and duration of the cooling cycles of the hot room vary from person to person according to personal preferences. The sauna in Finland is an old phenomenon and its roots are difficult to trace, but it is believed that its first versions are 7000 BC. One of the first written mentions of what is believed to be the sauna habits of the ancestors of the Finns was written by Nestor the Chronicler in 1112. He told about "hot wood saunas in which naked bathers are beaten with branches and finally pour cold water on themselves ". One of the reasons why the culture of the sauna has always flourished in Finland has been due to the versatility of the sauna. The Finns would use the sauna to live, eat, address hygiene issues and, most importantly, give birth in an almost sterile environment. Another reason for its popularity is that in such a cold climate, the sauna allows people to warm up for at least a short period of time. However, it is as popular in summer as it is in winter.
