Excursion departure from Semporna, in the province of Sabah, on the island of Borneo (Malaysia), in the direction of three islands, to walk through two of them and do 4 Snorkels.
The place is very curious. It is Semporna, a coastal city, which is extended into the sea, with houses and services above the water, supported by wooden pillars, nailed to the bottom. The volume of houses is such that more people live in them than in the same population on land, they are like immense neighborhoods. This can be done because, in this part of the Celebes Sea, the water level (at high tide) does not exceed 2/3 meters, over a very large area, generating a kind of sea with very little depth and very spacious. The inhabitants of these semi-marine places are usually very humble, so they do not have the wealth to buy land or houses on land.
We left the Semporna coast in an east-northeast direction in a speedboat, propelled by an outboard motor, 8 tourists and 4 crew members (2 sailors and 2 snorkelling companions 🤿). During the beginning of the voyage and for a good stretch, the seabed could be seen perfectly, due to the shallowness and transparency of the water of this sea. We went past several super luxury Resorts, built on top of the water in the same way as the natives their houses, it is a strange feeling to see constructions supported by pillars on the sea horizon, and thus we sailed about 20 nautical miles +-, until we reached to the first island TIMBA TIMBA. This was a long, white beach, with a little vegetation in its widest part, and surrounded by a large area of shallow coral. We walk through it, with the feeling of walking in the middle of the ocean. We got on the boat to go snorkeling 🤿 on the opposite side. The same sensation of walking in the ocean is in this case snorkeling on a coral bottom, with a depth of just 2-4 meters, amazing! What to say about marine life, in the middle of the sea…
We repeated this experience on another island near MATAKING, and this time we stopped to eat.
We sailed to another nearby island PANDANAN, and this time we only snorkelled 🤿.
I had never been in a place like it, it is something that is difficult for me to describe, I try it here, so that if someone reads this, they will be curious, I had no idea where I was going, I just wanted to see fish while snorkeling 🤿, and I found something impressive, in beauty and magnitude.
If someone goes there one day, keep in mind that they are going to see two worlds, one the world of mostly poor and humble local people, and another world of very rich people, with a lot of capacity to occupy exclusive spaces, where only they can be, and all this in the midst of an exotically overwhelming and beautiful nature. In the local world there is a lot of dirt, in the other world I imagine not, but only nature is capable of uniting them in this exceptional sea.
A hug 🤗.
