Monkey Island is one of the most representative islands that make up the Cat Ba archipelago in the Gulf of Tonkin. Access to Isla de los Monos can only be done in private maritime transport from Cat Ba Island. On the island there is a Resort in which to stay if we want to spend the night there.
The ascent is actually a short climb of 150 meters in which we will save an approximate vertical drop of 50 meters. The terrain is formed by karstic rock, very subject to erosion, which shapes the profiles of the rock, giving the rocks the appearance of needles or very sharp thorns, so it is common to end with small cuts and scratches, due to the irregularity of them.
You also have to be especially careful with slips, since the stones are usually very wet, in fact, this ascent was made under rain.
From the beach we head south, past the Visitor Center and when we reach the end of the beach we see that there is a path that goes up to the left, between the brush, forming a stone stairway through the jungle, we take.
We take height quickly, while the rocky peaks stand out in cascade as you climb, many of the rocks are very sharp. In many occasions you must directly use climbing props to overcome a ledge, finding the points of support in the erosion marks created by the water and the elements in the porous stone.
The most complicated section is in a step that must be saved almost at the top, where it is necessary to climb between two rocks and lean against a tree. They are barely 2 or 3 meters, but due to the steepness of the terrain and the prevailing humidity that makes everything slip, it can be an insurmountable obstacle for the fearful.
Once you overcome this last obstacle you reach the top and delight yourself with the astonishing views of the entire Halong Bay, with the green of the vegetation and the blue of the sea and the sky between the islands.
The descent is done by the same path as the climb.
