Trekking Everest Base Camp. Ngozumpa Glacier moraine. gokyo
In this area there is a large concentration of glaciers that are in strong regression. Of the four most important I was able to visit three: the Ngozumpa, the Khumbu, the Nangpa and the Imja and its glacial lake the Imja Tse
The Ngozumpa Glacier is the longest glacier of the four. From the Gokyo Namaste Lodge, we climbed to the top of the lateral moraine of the glacier and… what a spectacle, what a thrill! Before us we had a river of ice 32 km long, which descends from Cho Oyu (8,188 m), on the border with Tibet, to a little below Gokyo. The immensity of the glacier and the evening light made it unique.
The next morning, at sunrise, from the top of Gokyo Ri (5,360 m), we were again able to enjoy unforgettable views of the Gokyo Glacier and Glacier Lake, with a backdrop of 5 peaks over 8,000 m, Everest included.
As you can see in the photos, the glaciers are largely covered by earth and rocks that give them the appearance of dirty ice, only dotted with small green or gray lakes. The loss of ice mass is evident in the photos where the height of the lateral moraines of the glaciers can be appreciated.
