Trekking Everest Base Camp. Gorakshep (5140m) - Kala Pattar (5640m)
Second part of the day and I think the most demanding of the trip. Remember that we have organized the trekking, going up to base camp the previous afternoon and now it's time to get up early to go up to Kala Pattar and of course do the stage to the town of Dimboche (4400 m). This day is very long and very demanding. I don't think it's too far-fetched to climb up and go down to the town of Lobuche. But well, it is organized like this and in the end it is done without further ado.
The ascent to the top of kala Pattar starts at 4:30 am. This is departure time, I don't want to tell you how cold it is at that time. They left us a thermos with hot tea for breakfast and we ate a bar to start the march. At that time, as usual, there is no one awake to prepare breakfast.
We start at 4:45 am. The walk. The route is not very difficult, we have a very obvious path that ascends in constant ascent for the first section up to a small hill.
Of course, we did the whole march until we almost reached the top with the front. It's fun to see a snake of hikers that are ascending at a deadly pace.
One of the things that caught my attention the most is how cold it is. It is essential to go up warm and with good gloves and boots. The temperature will be around 8 or 9 below zero and if it is windy the thermal sensation can be much higher.
With the first rays of sun we reached the top. The last section we find a chaos of rock, which we are avoiding following the path and in some section we have to use our hands.
Finally, a final section of rock leaves us at the impressive top. It took us an hour and a half and now it's time to sit down and watch the show.
Before us stands Everest and all its acolytes. One of the greatest shows in the world. The Pumori, the omnipresent Ama Dablam, Nupse, Lhotse, Lhotse Shar and a hundred other peaks that I am unable to identify.
Certainly we do not spend a lot of time at the top since the first rays of sun do not heat up very much and the body freezes quickly.
In little more than half an hour and at a fast pace we descend back to Gorakshep.
I think that if the body allows it, this is one of the essential climbs, the sunrise at the top of Kala Pattar is one of those postcards that are not forgotten.
