Trekking Everest Base Camp. Chukhung to Chukhung Ri
The road began to ascend rapidly along a path created by the footsteps of those who before me, over the years, had made the way to the top.
I had to climb across the moraine to a plain and from there start the hardest and steepest part of the climb that would take me to a col. Once there, on the right hand side, until reaching the summit of Chukung Ri. I walked with short steps and my heart was beating with unusual force, doing everything it could to pump oxygen into a body that was spending it with an excessive speed.
However, I did not count on the fact that the last stretch, the last two hundred meters, the path disappeared. You had to walk between stone chips and the route was no longer obvious. I was skirting the summit trying to find a way up.
Reaching Chukung Ri gives you a dimension of scale that is very hard to compete with. Chukung Ri brings you closer to the massif where the Nuptse and Lhotse are and you feel that you can almost touch it, that you are a stone's throw from them and yet the numbers say something different. Chukung Ri is 5,550 meters high and above us, Nuptse reaches 7,861 meters and Lhotse 8,516 meters.
That is, from where I was to its top there was almost 3 kilometers of difference only vertically. If we took the tallest building in the world to date, the Burj Khalifa with its 829 meters high, we could place three like it vertically, one after the other and we would still not reach the top of Lhotse. I felt like I was on the shoulders of giants and barely reached their ankles.
I used a lot of my time there to try to recognize the routes of previous days and to identify the next day's pass. From there you could see Dingboché and the route up from Chukung. Turning his back on the Nuptse massif and the Lhotse was the ever constant Ama Dablam. To their left the Chukung valley closed in, behind which the beautiful 8463 meter pyramid of Makalu could be seen.
To his right, already old acquaintances. The massif that accompanied us since we left it behind in Namche Bazaar, where the Karyolung, the Khatang and the Numbur rose. A closer shot of Khumbila, a mountain that we had been able to see very closely when passing through Kunde and Khumjung.
If we continued to the right we entered unknown territory. There you could see the Kongmala pass. The Melungtse loomed behind it (much further than one might imagine, since it was completely within Tibet). It was followed by the Lobuché, again in the Central Valley and we moved away again to the border with Tibet in the form of 7,351 meters of Nangpai Gosum and another eight thousand, El Cho Oyu (8,201 m.). The Chumbu, the Gyachung Kang and the Pumo Ri (another pico delicacy) completed the circle.
The descent, against all odds, was relatively easy for me.
