Trekking Everest Base Camp 8. Thagnag (4640 m) - Cho La Pass (5400 m) - Dzonglha (4830 m)
Queen day of all trekking, to which we must add one more consideration. Unlike the other days, such as the climb to Gokyo Ri, this 5,400-meter pass is mandatory for everyone. Although the climb to Gokyo and Kala Patar are optional, here we must overcome this tough test.
To this we have to add another attraction and that is that we have some section on the ascent to Chola where we must use our hands, which indicates a good inclination and that when crossing the pass we have about a kilometer of hard snow and at times ice . Therefore, this will be one of the most demanding and technical days of the entire route.
To face this journey, our guide suggests that we get up at 4:30 am. Breakfast time 05:00 am and we start walking at 05:30 am. Therefore, a long and demanding day is expected, although the distance is not very long.
The Chola Pass is a high hill with a steep climb and there is no way to avoid it, except by walking for several days, retracing what you have walked. Therefore the whole group is strong and we will face it in the best possible way.
We begin with a constant climb near a small stream of water that tirelessly leads us to overcome the first 300 meters of accumulated unevenness.
Here we stand in a hill with some flags that allow us to contemplate the impressive ascent that remains to the Chola pass. About two kilometers of vertical ascent between rocks and fine sand.
Before we have a drop of one hundred meters of unevenness to give the climb a little more attractive. As usual at a very, very calm pace we face the climb.
One of the sensations that appear as you go up is that the heart rate does not drop no matter how much you stop to rest. But with good spirits and the pertinent stops we go up to the pass. Before us the next valley opens, leaving for a few days the entire route that makes up the Dudh river.
We make a stop at the Chola to enjoy the views, eat something and of course get the group together again, each one has a rhythm and that is the best way to climb, without rushing.
Once the relevant photos have been taken, the descent begins. Here we find a good section, just over a kilometer of hard snow and some ice sheet. This step can change considerably depending on the weather.
This is one of the important information that we must have when starting the trek. We are very insistent on obtaining information from the agency on how the pass was, since there have been many years when they have even had to change the itinerary due to accumulated snow.
The agency must inform if it is necessary to use crampons. If you have experience in the snow, it costs nothing to buy rubber crampons, which weigh no more than a few grams and give you significant security.
After two kilometers of ascent for just over an hour and a half we reached the pass and began the descent. This runs through the center of a wide snow trough in descent, although as we descend the path moves to the right, halfway along one side of the mountain.
From this point we begin a descent through a small vertical path where we can see how the valley opens up at our feet. This descent has some small downclimbing and above all be careful. Along the descent we make some stops to contemplate the spectacle.
As we descend we come to a large esplanade, we change direction and head left in search of the village of Dzongla (4830 m).
Small village created for the obligatory stop for tourists. A desert site with the hardness of the high mountain but located at the foot of the 6,300-meter climb of Cholatse, which gives it an impressive image.
