Torrenalp cablecar - Torrenthorn

Ascensión al Torrenthorn - 2998m, Cantón Valais/Wallis, Suiza

El pueblo de Leukerbad, famoso por sus aguas termales, está enclavado en un pequeño valle, rodeado de murallas de roca caliza. El Torrenthorn, con sus casi 3000m supone un mirador excepcional tanto del valle de Leukerbad, como de todo el valle del Ródano (Valais), así como las cumbres de los 4000m de la frontera Francesa e Italiana.

Ascensión fácil si no hay nieve, corta, ideal para hacer en una mañana o en solitario ya que no tiene mucho peligro, y con unas vistas de todo el valle impresionantes.

Desde el pueblo de Leukerbad, cogemos el teleférico TorrentAlp que nos sube hasta Rinderhütte (2313m). Igualmente este itinerario puede hacerse perfectamente andando, pero dentro de la idea de hacer ascensiones cortas que ocupen sólo unas horas opté por coger el ascensor. Desde Rinderhütte, a la salida del teleférico, seguimos las indicaciones que nos dirigen hasta el Torrenthorn, pasando primero por el hotel Torrenthorn (0h22min). Desde el hotel, nos dirigimos hacia el Norte para coger la arista Oeste que nos llevará hasta la cumbre del Torrenthorn. La arista no tiene ninguna dificultad, pero en presencia de nieve la caida hacia el Norte es prohibida, ya que el desnivel es bastante grande. En la parte final de la Arista, el lado Sur también tiene importante desnivel, y forma el circo que hay a los pies del Torrenthorn y que desciende hasta el hotel Torrenthorn, con un terreno de piedra suelta bastante propenso a los resbalones.

Una vez alcanzados los 2800m (1h16m), el terreno se hace más llano hasta llegar a la cima del TorrentHorn, a 2998m, 1h30min. En la cima se observa, en su cara norte, el pequeño Glaciar Majini Gletscher, con una gran rimaya provocada por la reflexión del sol en la roca. La cima es bastante aérea, por lo que en presencia de nieve conviene evitar todo tipo de resbalones.

La bajada se hace por el mismo camino, pero a la mitad de la arista de subida cogemos una senda que nos lleva hasta el hotel Torrenthorn por las pistas de la estación de esqui. Una vez en el hotel llegamos al Rinderhütte, donde está la estación de teleférico, desde donde bajamos al pueblo (2h40min).

Comentarios:

- Excursión fácil, ideal para una salida corta de media mañana. En presencia de nieve (que dada la altura puede durar perfectamente hasta bien avanzado el verano) extremar precauciones tanto en la arista como en la cima, ya que la caida tiene un desnivel bastante grande y una pendiente bastante pronunciada, aunque la arista en sí no supone ninguna dificultad.

- Comprobar los horarios de los teleféricos de la estación si queremos usarlos para la bajada (http://www.leukerbad.ch/)

- Los baños de Burgerbad son muy recomendables para después de la salida.

Ascent to Torrenthorn - 2998m, at Vallais (Wallis) Canton in Switzerland

The village of Leukerbad, popular because of his thermal baths, is situated in a small valley surrounded by walls of limestone rock. The summit of the Torrenthorn, with its almost 3000m has a privileged view of the Leukerbad valley, as well as all Rhone valley and all 4000m summits of the French and Italian border.

Easy ascent if there is no snow, short, ideal to climb in half a morning, lonely, since there are not many risk, and with beautiful views of almost all Valais canton.

At Leukerbad village, we get in the cablecar TorrentAlp which will leave us at Rinderhütte, at 2313m altitude. This traject can be equally done walking, but, with the idea of doing short ascents of just a few hours, I opted for using the cablecar. Starting at Rinderhütte, at the cablecar exit, we follow the indications on the sign-post leading to Torrenthorn. After 20min we arrive at TorrentHorn hotel, from there, we head North direction until we arrive to the West ridge of the Torrenthorn, which will lead us directly to the summit. The ridge has no special difficulty, but in presence of snow, a fall is prohibited. In the final part of the ridge, the South side is rather aerial as well, making up the glaciar cirque at the base of Torrenthorn, going down till the Torrenthorn hotel. So again, a fall here is prohibited. This last part of the ridge is rather sloppy, since the terrain is made up of slip-prone gravel.

Once we reach the 2800m (1h16min), the terrain becomes plainer, until the summit of the Torrenthorn, at 2998m (1h30min).
At the summit, we can observe, on the Nortface, a small glacier, Majini Gletscher, with a great rimaye provoked by the reflection of the sun on the rocks. The summit is rather aerial, so, in presence of snow, we should avoid slippering.

The path down is done using the same trail, but, at the middle of the ridge, we take a small trail leading to Torrenthorn Hotel using the ski runs. Once we arrive at Torrenhorn hotel, the path back to Rinderhütte, where we take the cable car back to Leukerbad (2h40min) is the same we used to climb up

Comments:

- Easy hike, ideal for a short half moorning trip. In presence of snow (given the altitude we can find snow until mid summer perfectly), we should be careful in the ridge and in the summit as well, since a fall here is prohibited, but the ridge itself is not dangerous.

- Check the ski-lift timetables if we want to use them on the way back to Leukerbad (http://www.leukerbad.ch/)

- Burgerbad thermal ressort are recommended after the hike
