Route from the Mangatepopo car park to the Ketetahi car park, passing through the volcanoes Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, South Crater, Red Crater, Emerald Lakes, Blue Lake, Central Crater, and Ketetahi Shelter, only at way back (without return), doing what is known as the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, one of New Zealand's most popular day routes.
The route discovers the spectacular volcanic landscapes of the Tongariro National Park, passing through two of the three volcanoes that define it, the Ngauruhoe and the Tongariro, the latter being the smallest. The third volcano, and also the largest (in fact, it is the highest mountain on the North Island), is the Ruapehu, with views from the top of the Ngauruhoe. Both the Ruapehu and the Ngauruhoe are also known for their appearance in the Lord of the Rings film, representing both the Mount of Destiny (Orodruin), where the Ring must be destroyed (the Ngauruhoe was filmed by To represent the images of the mountain from afar, and in the Ruapehu some scenes of Mordor were shot, including those where Frodo and Sam climbed the mountain to destroy the Ring. The route is one-way (without return), although the area offers other options and the route can be modified if it is preferred. In this case, it starts at the Mangatepopo parking lot because it is the end of the highest route and the road will, thus, be lowered; However, it can also be done in reverse. Once you reach the end of the route, it is normal to take a shuttle that takes you to the starting point again, where the car has left, but the service is quite expensive and, Going in two cars and leaving one at the beginning and the other at the end is much cheaper.
At the beginning of the route, the amount of people gathered at the point of departure already indicates the popularity of the route, especially in summer when time accompanies. At the same beginning there are also posters with directions and maps, as well as some toilets. It starts soon because the route will last all day, and the first sections of the road are rather flat and easy to follow. At one and a half kilometers from the start you will find the intersection with the Tongariro Northern Circuit, a multiple-day route in the same National Park, where some toilets have also been placed, and about 500 meters later you will find the access to the refuge Mangatepopo, which is not seen from the road. The route follows a well-prepared path (wooden walkway) and with spectacular views of the Ngauruhoe volcano, which stands imposing to the right. Shortly before climbing to the foot of the volcano, there are the Soda Springs, quite popular waterfalls that can be seen from the main road, although to approach there is a secondary route of no more than 10 minutes. After finding other toilets and taking a little more height, you reach the skirt of the Ngauruhoe volcano, where you will find a sign indicating the intersection between the main road and the path to make the top of the volcano; In this case, this secondary route has been chosen and climb to the summit. At the beginning the path has no problem, but some signs warn of the danger of falling rocks; Soon after the information on the poster becomes understandable, when a very heavy crust of almost a kilometer (in fact, to the summit) begins. Although the ascent is offering incredible views of the surrounding area, such as the South Crater, and the ridge full of red rocks, the sloping terrain makes the desire to make the peak become increasingly stronger. Once up, the first one to receive is the windings, but the relief of having finished the scrub is of great importance. The sufficiently wide rocks and the almost perfect cone of the volcano allow the entire crater to go round, and enjoy great views of the entire National Park, the Ruapehu Volcano, and even Mount Taranaki, whose silhouette is drawn to the horizon The inside of the crater is also curious, and you can see the different layers of volcanic material, as well as the predominantly red color.
After enjoying the views, the descent starts, either the most dangerous or the rising. Some of the rocks that fall as a result of another walker can be quite heavy, and it is not difficult for any one to end up hitting in any part of the body. After the effort, you reach the intersection where the rise has begun, and continue along the main route, which follows the wide path that passes between the two volcanoes, in the South Crater, with wide views and panoramic views of the volcanic landscape. Rising about 200 meters, you reach the height of Red Crater, which, as its name suggests, stands out due to the redness of the rocks it is composed of. A little before, you can also find the turnoff to make the summit of Mount Tongariro. After the Crater Red, you can immediately see the Emerald Lakes, which stand out for their intense turquoise blue color, and also the Blue Lake, larger than the others. Undoing the previous ascent, you immediately reach the first lakes, which can be reached almost from the road, and you can see the smoke that emerges from the earth as a result of geothermal activity. Before arriving at Blue Lake you can also find the intersection with the road leading to the Waihohonu and Oturere refuges, which is part of the Tongariro Northern Circuit. From this point you can also clearly observe the remains of lava casting at the Central Crater, which looks like a solidified black wave. After passing the Blue Lake, the route begins to descend so as not to climb again. From the valley formed by the North Crater (to the left of the path) and the Rotopaunga mountain (on the right) you can see Lake Rotoaira and even Lake Taupo in the distance. Further on, the path winds through hills of tall grass until you reach Ketetahi Shelter, a refuge that is in the middle of the road. From here, the path continues to find the forest and, after leaving behind some toilets and passing through the Ketetahi Falls area, feeling the noise of the water from the streams deep down, you finally reach the Ketetahi parking lot, the final point of this route.
It is an indispensable route, with spectacular and atypical landscapes, which deserves the effort. The whole route is well signposted and it is practically impossible to get lost. Leaving aside the ascension to the Ngauruhoe volcano, the route can also be considered affordable and does not present any particular difficulty apart from the distance and the unevenness; that is, the roads are mostly in good condition. For its part, the ascent to the Ngauruhoe volcano can be considered difficult, not so much by the slope and slope, but by the sloping terrain of the peat, which requires a good dose of patience. It is recommended to make the route on a serene day, without rain or clouds, to enjoy the views, as well as protect yourself from the sun at all times. It is probably one of the most recommended routes in North Island.
