Itinerary description
A strenuous hike with lots and lots of extremely steep climbs. Definately not recommendable to start of with, like I did... However, there are no better views towards Ushba than on this hike. When you reach the base of the glacier, you might as well as be in Patagonia or the Himalayas. Due to its proximity to the Russian border, this areas is considered to be 'sensitive' and is therefore guarded by a borderpost; please pick up a 'permit' in Mazeri at the police-station. After the borderpost, things get rough; the next 4 kilometers are extremely steep and slippery, so don't try this in wet weather. To top things of, there are some exposed bits as well and a lovely river-crossing close to a steep waterfall. To cut to the chase; do not attempt this hike if you are afraid of heights.
