Itinerary description

Why worthwhile? Extremely beautiful view form the top.

Starting point: Large parking lot at the valley station of the Lienzer Bergbahnen [Lienz 680m. – Ost-Tirol].

Total time: 4½ - 5 hours.

Difficulties: Up until the Neualpseen no difficulties: good paths and without to much of a height difference (difficulty rating: 2). From here the actual climb to the top starts: mostly across large (man high) boulders and steep passages (trittsicherheit and use of hands necessary!). Climb concentrated and take along enough water for the journey (no huts or wells in the surrounding area). Only advisable with good weather conditions.

Route description:

From the mountain station Steinermandl op 2189m. we go left (north west) up, across a supply (cow road block) and pass underneath a ski lift (at the second road block the route goes over in to cow paths). At a fork in the road we choose the right hand way to the Schleinitz top (route Neualpseen – Schleinitz). Passing an information board we walk on a well made path passing the Goischlemandl underneath. At a small cabin the path turns to the left and a short descent across wooden steps en loose stones follows. Next we cross a bowl via large rock “plateaus”. After this we climb up towards the Neualpseen (2433m) over stone covered alp meadows.

From here we go left in western direction and walk past the banks of several small mountain lakes. Then keeping to the right towards a broad ridge (we can slightly shorten the way towards Schleinitz at the sign with the fork in the road). We follow the excellent white/red markings which let us descend a bit in to a large ‘mulde’ (bowl). Once in this bowl, the markings lead us across large boulders around the first ‘elevation’. Climbing these sometimes man high boulders requires trittsicherheit and concentration. A short steel cable safety measure follows after which we have to climb up a steep part across loose gravel and pebbles. We end up on a sort of plateau which we have to cross (from right to left). Now we have a very good view of our target: the cross on the top of the Schleinitz.

Also on the plateau we cross large boulders. Once across the end piece of the tiresome journey follows: first in turns up to the mountain ridge (at the top climb with some cautiousness) and then keep right towards the top.

After a well deserved break we take the same route back to our starting.

Done in 2005.
