Itinerary description

The Salkantay trek Sky Lodge is the longest premium version of this route.

On the first day, 10 km of the route is covered. You are picked up in Cusco and taken to the starting point of the trek: Challancha. The first section is in the direction of Soraypampa. On the way you stop at the spectacular Humantay Lagoon. Then the road continues to the Sky Camp of Soraypampa, where you sleep in glass igloos.

The second day's route is 22 km long and you reach the highest point of the trek: the Salkantay Pass at 4,600 meters altitude. Then there is a 5-kilometer descent to Huayracmachay where you have lunch and then the trail continues through a tropical area known as cloud forest. This is about 10 kilometers. At the end of this hike you arrive at Chaullay to spend the night.

On the third day you will walk 18 kilometers. The route begins in the direction of the town of La Playa, which is reached after crossing the Santa Teresa Valley and the town of Colpapampa. After a 1 hour walk you arrive at Lucmabamba camp where you spend the night.

The route of the fourth day is the longest and the most complicated: 25 kilometers. It starts with a 2 hour ascent that takes you to the Inca site of Llactapata from where you can see Machu Picchu. Then the route continues downhill for another 2 hours. The hike continues up to Intiwatana, a watchtower, from where you continue for another 3 hours following the train tracks until you reach Aguas Calientes, the town from where you visit Machu Picchu.

The fifth and last day is the ascent to Machu Picchu. You have a guided tour of two hours and then you can see it on your own. After the visit you can choose whether to go down to Aguas Calientes walking or by bus, which costs 12 USD. From Aguas Calientes, you go by train to Ollantaytambo and from there they take you by minibus back to Cusco.
