Ascent to Vihren peak (2914m), the third highest in the Balkans after Musala (2925m) and Olympus (2918m). The route starts from the Vihren hut at an altitude of 1970m. Access is by road or bus from Bansko. In the first case, start early, even at 7 in the morning there is not enough space in the shelter's parking lot, which has a small capacity.
At the Vihren hut we will see the trail signs and we will follow a course NW. In 600m at the intersection we will go right towards Kazana and the path goes up traversing for 1.5km to the col at an altitude of 2360m. We will walk a few meters east on the ridge and then NW traversing the northern slope to the Kazana area. From this point we see the col between Vihren and Kutelo 1 which we approach in less than 1.5 km. The scenery is amazing as we pass the Snezhnika Glacier area, which is the remains of the Vihren Glacier on the northern foot of the mountain and at an altitude between 2425m and 2450m.
From the col we will climb the last 250m in altitude in a southern direction. Going up, this steep slope becomes rocky and from some point to the top there is a chain that can be used as a support while several times we will do easy scrambling. The view from the top all around is impressive. We descend southwards on a rough field to the col and then on a path to the east. We will need to descend 950m in 3.5km on a path that is clear but relatively rough. Just before the shelter we will meet the ascent path and there the circular route ends.
