Itinerary description
Nevado del Acay is a mountain of almost 6,000 meters located in the eastern portion of the border of the Puna de Atacama. It is a non volcanic mountain of quite prominence and stands out in the region of San Antonio de los Cobres.
Despite the famous "Abra del Acay", which is a portion of Route 40 that crosses this pass located at over 5,000 meters, its access is not through there.
In this tracklog the way to the summit and the approach are in the same track.
It is possible to take advantage of this ascent to acclimatize. I recommend that before attempting the Acay climb, climbers should stay at least two nights in San Antonio de los Cobres, have already been to the Abra del Acay and use the camp at the base of the mountain to sleep at least one night at higher altitude. Even better to have already climbed the easy Tuzgle Volcano.
