Itinerary description
Also known as Cerro General Belgrano, the Nevado Cachi is one of the most challenging mountains of the province of Salta in Argentina.
Unlike the Puna mountains, Cachi is approached and climbed from the east, in a very different landscape context from the volcanic mountains of northern Argentina. While most of the mountains in this province are climbed in 4x4 vehicles, Cachi is approached on foot, in a beautiful 2 or 3 day trek.
This Traklog shows the walk by car until just after Las Pailas, where the trekking begins. Our highest camp was at an altitude of 5250 meters, which made a great and tiring ascent.
This camp is situated at the base of a rather steep amphitheatre and it is possible to raise the camp beyond this barrier, and it is even a possibility to porter to gain acclimatisation.
But the best strategy is undoubtedly to arrive on this mountain already acclimatised and thus be able to walk the whole way faster.
