RILA MOUNTAINS
Musala SUMMIT
Bulgaria
top of the balkans
We had no difficulty leaving Turkey. Green passport holders can pass without a visa. The road from Kapıkue to Philippe is empty and very good. There are many Ottoman period artifacts in Plovdiv. There are many Roman ruins in the city. Here we visited the city for about 5 hours and set out towards the Borovest ski area. This is a very large rock center built at the foothills of the Rila Mountains. There are hundreds of large and small herbs. One of the important ski resorts in Europe... It is a very large facility with gondolas and chair lifts that reach almost all the peaks along the Rila Mountains.
sparkling streams
Cedar forests up to 70 - 80 meters high
With snow thickness approaching 1 meter
Rila mountains welcome you.
Rila Mountain, also the largest peak in the Balkans, is in the middle of this mountain range.
Musala summit road...
Musala summit road consists of 2 trails... we preferred the ridge line. We used crampons.
We did not use rope. The road to the lakes on the route further south should have been easier... the lakes had not melted yet.. it was snow and ice. The lakes route will be more enjoyable in May.
The main difficulty for Musala summit is getting close to the mountain... It is almost impossible to reach the summit in a single day without using a gondola. There is a road of approximately 25 km from 1330 meters to 3000 meters. The gondola takes you up to 2100 m. 35 leva. It's definitely worth it. I advise. The gondola passes right in front of the Big Samakov hotel in the hotel area and is very fast. It reaches 1000 m altitude in 25 minutes.
It was very foggy when we reached the top. It was windy and snowing. Therefore, we could not see much of the view. On the way back, we had the chance to watch the Rila mountains in the fog that occasionally bloomed.
It was a summit activity that was a step above the trekking mode.
It is a geography, a mountain and a history that I recommend all mountaineering teams in Turkey to see. Be sure to go.
