Itinerary description
The easternmost part of the Esja massif is made up of a series of rhyolite cones known as Móskarðahnjúkar. Because of the light-coloured rocks it always seems from Reykjavik that the sun is shining on these summits - not a bad reason for visiting them! I did this hike in late October, enjoying perfect solitude except when scaring up huge flocks of ptarmigan.
