Starting point is the refuge "Cotopaxi Cara Sur" at 3995 m. For the journey from the community of Ticatilin to the refuge a 4x4 off-road vehicle is recommended due to the partly bad road conditions. On the way, after some time you will come across a closed gate. You should ask the owner of the refuge for the key in advance. The car can be parked below the refuge. From there you walk up the ridge. After about 1 km a hardly visible path begins, which deviates from the ridge to the lower left. Here the north route leads about 3 km through an open and sparsely vegetated landscape. At the beginning, the trail crosses a landscape of grass and herbs, which after some time turns into a sandy landscape. Shortly before a wide hollow you will see the prominent rock "Santa Barbara" on the horizon, which you pass on the left side until you reach slight road traces. Follow the tracks further up until a small path turns off to the left. Continue on to the Morurco Valley, which you follow down again. The trail leads out of the valley through more rugged gorges with beautiful colors up to the saddle (4600 m) between the Cotopaxi south face and the Morurco north face. The path is hardly visible, so be careful, especially when the mountain is cloudy. The ascent is on a steep sand and stone track (between 30 and 40 degrees gradient) up to the edge of the summit; then the mountain has to be climbed over a crumbly rock, with sections of up to III. degree. The rock is not very good and you have to be very careful with loose stones. Before reaching the highest peak, one has to cross two lower peaks.

Note: The Morurco usually has snow and ice during the rainy season, which makes the ascent to the summit almost impossible.

DESCRIPCIÓN DEL TOUR

El punto de partida es el Refugio Cotopaxi Cara Sur a 3995 m. Para el trayecto de la comunidad de Ticatilin al refugio, se recomienda un vehículo todoterreno 4x4 debido a las condiciones parcialmente malas de la carretera. En el camino se encontrará con una puerta cerrada después de algún tiempo. Deberías pedirle la llave al dueño del refugio con antelación. El coche puede ser aparcado debajo del refugio. Desde allí subes por la cresta. Después de aproximadamente 1 km, comienza un camino apenas visible, que se desvía de la cresta hacia la parte inferior izquierda. Aquí la ruta norte conduce unos 3 km a través de un paisaje abierto y con escasa vegetación. Al principio, el sendero atraviesa un paisaje de hierbas, que después de algún tiempo se convierte en un paisaje arenoso. Poco antes de una amplia hondonada, verá la prominente piedra "Santa Bárbara" en el horizonte, que pasará a la izquierda hasta llegar a ligeras huellas de una carretera. Sigue las huellas más arriba hasta que un pequeño sendero se desvíe a la izquierda. Se continúa caminando hasta el valle del Morurco, que se sigue bajando de nuevo. El sendero sale del valle a través de más gargantas escarpadas con hermosos colores hasta la ensillada (4600 m) entre la cara sur del Cotopaxi y la cara norte del Morurco. El camino es apenas visible, así que ten cuidado, especialmente cuando la montaña está nublada. El ascenso se realiza por un camino empinado de arena y piedra (entre 30 y 40 grados de inclinación) hasta el borde de la cima; luego hay que subir la montaña sobre una roca desmenuzable, con secciones de hasta el III. grado. La roca no es muy buena y hay que tener mucho cuidado con las piedras sueltas. Antes de llegar al pico más alto, hay que cruzar dos picos más bajos.

Nota: El Morurco suele tener nieve y hielo durante la temporada de lluvias, lo que hace casi imposible el ascenso a la cima.

TOURENBESCHREIBUNG

Ausgangspunkt ist die Berghütte "Cotopaxi Cara Sur" auf 3995 m. Für die Anfahrt von der Gemeinde Ticatilin bis zur Berghütte ist aufgrund der teilweise schlechten Straßenverhältnisse ein 4x4 Geländewagen empfehlenswert. Unterwegs stößt man nach einiger Zeit auf ein geschlossenes Tor. Den Schlüssel sollte man beim Besitzer der Berghütte im Vorfeld anfragen. Das Auto kann unterhalb der Hütte geparkt werden. Von dort läuft man den Grat weiter nach oben. Nach knapp 1 km beginnt ein kaum sichtbarer Weg, der vom Grat nach links unten abweicht. Hier führt die Nordroute etwa 3 km durch eine offene und spärlich bewachsene Landschaft. Anfangs geht es quer über eine Gras- und Krautlandschaft, die nach einiger Zeit in eine Sandlandschaft übergeht. Kurz vor einer breiten Mulde sieht man rechts oben den markanten Steinfels "Santa Barbara" am Horizont, welchen man links umgeht bis leichte Straßenspuren erreicht werden. Den Spuren weiter nach oben folgen bis ein kleiner Pfad nach links abweicht. Man geht weiter bis zum Morurco-Tal, welches man wieder nach unten folgt. Die Strecke führt aus dem Tal über weitere zerklüftete Schluchten mit schönen Farben bis hinauf auf den Sattel (4600 m) zwischen der Cotopaxi-Südwand und der Morurco-Nordwand. Der Weg ist kaum sichtbar, daher ist Vorsicht geboten, besonders wenn der Berg bewölkt ist. Der Aufstieg führt über eine steile Sand- und Steinpiste (zwischen 30 und 40 Grad Steigung) bis zur Gipfelkante hinauf; dann muss der Berg über einen brüchigen Fels bestiegen werden, mit Abschnitten von bis zu einem Schwierigkeitsgrad III. Der Fels ist nicht sehr gut, und man muss mit lockeren Steinen sehr vorsichtig sein. Bevor man den höchsten Gipfel erreicht, muss man zwei niedrigere Gipfel überqueren.

Hinweis: Der Morurco hat normalerweise Schnee und Eis in der Regenzeit, welches den Aufstieg zum Gipfel fast unmöglich macht.
