Itinerary description
It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest standing mountain in the world.
At 5895 m of altitude, kili, as they call it, stands alone with its white peak.
I was mentally and physically prepared for this adventure, but you can never predict what will happen to you at a high altitude.
You have to eat, drink, and rest well as well as walk slowly, very slowly (Poleh Poleh)
The key is to climb high and camp low to help your body to acclimatise better and produce more oxygen.
We started our adventure at Machame Gate at 1800 m of elevation.
After the registration and check-up, we were hiking the Machame Road in the dense rain forest. On the first day, we walked for 11 km and reached the Machame Campsite at an altitude of 2835 m. We stayed the night there on the edge of the rain forest.
The next day, we left at 8 a.m., and the trail took us directly uphill. Vegetation is less dense, and the trees are shorter.
All day long, we had a beautiful view over the forests below us and Mount Meru. After around 4.5 hours and at a speed of 2km per hour, we arrived at Shira Campsite at an elevation of 3750 m.
It was a cloudy and cold evening.
On the third day, we were walking in the Alpine desert, going uphill to Lava Tower at 4620 m of elevation. We stayed there for lunch and to acclimatise, and then we took the trail downhill, passing by beautiful nature till we reached the Barranco Campsite at 3900 m of altitude.
Day 04: we had to climb the Barranco Wall for 300 m, and we arrived at a beautiful rock formation with an amazing double view over the Peak and the valley below us. From there, the trail goes downhill, with 100 m uphill at the end, and we arrived at Karanga Campsite at 3995 m of elevation.
On day 05, we had a short hike for 3.6 km with a difference of elevation of around 600 m. We got to Barafu Campsite (4673 m) at noon, had our lunch, and went to sleep and get some rest.
At midnight, we started preparing our stuff and left the camp at 1 a.m. to get to the peak.
A long way up, walking slowly in the freezing cold dark night. The ascent was very hard, but the minute we reached Stella point at 5756 m, we knew that the hard part was over. We still have 1.3 km to reach Uhuru Peak.
The timing was simply perfect. We got there at sunrise with an amazing view over the crater and the glaciers.
After spending some time up and taking some pictures, we returned to Barafu Camp, and from there, we continued down till Mweka Campsite at 3100 m of elevation.
On day 07, we continued our descent passing by the rain forest till we got to Mweka gate after 3 hours of walk covering around 9 km.
The experience is unforgettable, full of emotions, and a lot of stories to tell.
I would saynit is a difficult trail, especially because of the last night while going up Uhuru Peak.
Cheers !!!
