Itinerary description
The Kerlingarfjöll area constitutes the heavily eroded remains of an old volcano. After staying at the local cabin overnight we embarked on a circuit of the four peaks Fannborg, Snækollur, Snót and Loðmundur. The first three are very easy to ascend - the same cannot be said of Loðmundur. After making your way up a steep scree slope you eventually arrive at a fairly steep cliff face - composed of very loose and crumbly rock which tends to come away in your hands. The descent was of course every bit as exciting as the ascent. On the way back across the glacier we had to cross a number of open crevasses - I recommend tying up as we did.
