Itinerary description

The Haller Mauern is a small mountain chain running along the border of Styria and Upper Austria. The western buttress of the main ridge is formed by the 2,244 m high Großer Pyhrgas. Another prominent peaks are Scheiblingstein, Hexenturm (aka Bärenkarmauer) and Grabnerstein.

The trail to Hexenturm (aka Bärenkarmauer; 2197m) starts at Weng im Gesäuse, runs along the chalets of Granbneralm and Admonter Haus, before reaching the minor summits of Mittagskogel and Natterriegel.

The summit itself is accessible either via "Normalweg" (normal trail) or via "Hexenstieg". Hexenstieg is a klettersteig (it is not a climbiong trail but a rather steep hiking route secured by steel cables) level B/C which means that some parts are pretty difficult and dangerous to pass. It can be done even without proper climbing equipment though but sure-footedness and utmost caution is required. It took us maybe a whole hour to pass approximately 750 metres of Hexensteig.
