Itinerary description

A fairly easy route to the summit of Grasgiljatindur. Finding you way up the cliffs towering over the valley can be a bit tricky, you have to follow the "road" (a rough track) and then the narrow path which replaces it.
Although the Book shows the route following the spine of the massif leading to the Grasgiljatindur summit this is for the birds - you have to stay on the SW slopes (though our return track is better than our ascent - which was a bit too low an the slope - but don't try the shortcut at the end of Vesturdalur, it wasn't worth the slight savings in distance). By the same token, the direct path connecting the two summits is impassable (at least in summer, crampons and an ice axe migh allow the transit in winter) thus the somewhat circuitous path shown!.
A much shorter route appears to be available up a ridge on the western slopes of the mountain.
The view from the top is fantastic, in the west you see Öræfajökull, in the north-west Kverkfjöll (on the other side of Vatnajökull!) etc., etc. - well worth the effort.
