Ascent to Gran Paradiso - from Pont Breuil (Valsavarenche) via Refugio vitor Emanuel
With an altitude of 4061 mts, Gran Paradiso is the highest mountain in entirely Italian territory, as most of the 4000 mts in the Alpine range are in fact located on the borders with Switzerland and France. The mountain is located in the Aosta Valley, one of the most remote regions with the most untouched nature in all of Italy.
The climb to the summit of Gran Paradiso is classified as F+ (easy +), and the route is relatively easy from a technical point of view. However, technical equipment and experience in an alpine environment are essential for a safe ascent. Furthermore, the day of ascent to the summit is long, with a difference of more than 1300 meters and many setbacks can arise.
Unlike many other alpine climbs, there are no cable car systems that can take us halfway up, which means that the climber has a difference of more than 2000 meters to overcome.
There are 2 easier ways to reach the top:
1 - via Vítor Emanuel refuge
2 - via Chabod refuge.
In the first case, the access trail to the Refuge starts at Point Breuil, at about 2000 m altitude. In the second case, the trail starts at an altitude of 1900 m and is 2 or 3 km longer.
We carried out the activity in 2 days, as is the norm.
On the first day, the walk starts after lunch at Pont Breuil, where there is ample parking.
We cross the Savara River and for about 1000 meters we go up the Valsavarenche, leaning against the right bank of the river. Shortly after crossing a stream, a tributary of the Savara River, we begin the steep climb. The trail is mostly cobbled, up to the Victor Emanuel Refuge, with the exception of a section of about 200 or 300 meters, in which we have to cross an area of rock blocks of varying sizes.
We cross a forest that provides us with plenty of shade up to an altitude of 2200 mts, but from there, the sun exposure is very great.
The landscapes are exceptional and we can appreciate a waterfall on each side of the trail.
After about 5 km and after overcoming a difference in level of about 770 meters, we reach the Refúgio Vitor Emanuel, where we spend the night.
The next day we left around 4:30 am.
It is necessary to leave early in the morning to make the route without any surprises, in a calm way and with better snow/ice conditions.
Our activity was carried out in the first week of June, so we caught snow right outside the refuge and did not notice the beginning of the glacier.
The glacier is located at an elevation significantly higher than 3400 or 3500 mts and therefore, when reaching that level, it is essential to be alert, also because at this time of year the cravasses are covered by recent snow.
We had the opportunity to do the same route in September 2011 and found numerous crevasses throughout the glacier.
When the trail is done in the summer, we have to cross an extensive area of chaos of rock blocks of variable dimensions, with many bumps, until we reach the glacier.
In either case, it is important to follow the trail that has been trodden and marked in the snow.
We go around a large and high rocky ledge on the right side and continue the climb on the right side of the mountain to maintain a smoother slope.
When arriving relatively close to the ridge, we turn left towards the summit. In the background we see a high rocky tower, which we will go around on the left, reaching the top of Gran Paradiso, where the statue of “Madonna” is located.
On the way back, we have to make a small aerial crossing, on an exposed rocky pass, which is equipped with anchorages in the rock.
Previously, the ascent and descent used this same rocky pass, but due to the high number of climbers and to avoid congestion at this location, a different trail was created for the ascent.
The return to the refuge is carried out by the same route.
The descent always requires more care than the ascent; the fatigue is great and the snow more slippery. All attention is required for a safe descent.
After a stop at Refúgio to replenish some energy, we continue the descent along the same trail to the Valley.
We have published on wikiloc more detailed information of the 2 stages on the 8th and 9/6/23
