Itinerary description
I consider myself an experienced hiker. I have done several of the routes in Barney NP.
This hike started out with a traverse through thick, young, eucalypt trees. They made it difficult to navigate and quite painful to walk through but were manageable. The ground was covered in leaves and fallen branches, so snakes were a constant concern.
We made it to the base of the ascent for Tom's Tum. Admittedly, we were moving quite slowly. The "scramble" was more like an easy free solo climb. I have a great deal experience climbing, and whilst I would be okay with attempting the ascent, I would not do it without rope to repel with should you decide to leave. The climb back down was precarious, to say the least.
I would also recommend more than the suggested 3L of water. From the river, your nearest water source is Rum Jungle camp site. Should you decide to leave, or if you get stuck and have to make an emergency camp, you will want additional water (maybe another 3L). If you decide to come down, make sure you can make it to the boulder before the ascent to Tom's Tum false peak. Otherwise, you will be free soloing backwards in the dark.
I will 100% be coming back to try again. I will make sure to have a repel setup and plenty of water. It will also be closer to winter due to the exposure and snake risk. Please bring a PLB as well. Signal is always intermittent on Barney, and if you get stuck, you don't want to be running to find signal.
