TOUR DESCRIPTION

Starting point is a small parking lot at the gravel road E182 (4150 m, turnoff at the sign "Volcán Chiles"), which connects the villages Tufiño and Chilma Alto and runs along the southern flank of the volcano. A dusty road leads from here on the right uphill to the refuge "Ángel Cerón" at 4250 m, which can only be mastered with a 4x4 off-road vehicle. There is also a high antenna. From the refuge we keep down to the left and cross the grassy and marshy landscape, passing a small lagoon, until the path climbs steeply in serpentines up the ridge that runs to the southwest. This is normally the descent route, but this route can also be taken for the ascent; the normal path continues straight on from the refuge. At the top of the ridge the path becomes flatter again. On the left, a gigantic scree hollow with huge boulders falls down to two lagoons. Here you also have a nice view to the peaks of the volcano Chile. The summit massif is flanked on the right hand side. Attention: there is a lot of loose rock, a helmet is recommended. The route is partly marked with stone men. However, in fog it is sometimes difficult to make out the trail. Starting from the western flank, above two lagoons, the route goes briefly downhill and then uphill again through sand to the pass between the secondary summit to the south (with cross and flags) and the main summit to the north (also with summit cross). The secondary summit (4650 m, to the left) can be reached relatively easily over the rocky ridge (I. degree). The ascent to the main summit (4723 m, to the right) leads over a chimney with excellent grips in the solid rock (II. degree, at the beginning a little exposed). The entrance to the climb is marked by a large stone with a crack on the left edge. From the summit you have a beautiful view of the Cumbal volcano in Colombia and the mountains of Ecuador (Cotacachi, Cayambe, Antisana). It is advisable to make the descent at the same place. The way back follows the same route.

Note: Due to its location on the border with Colombia, it is advisable to ask in Tufiño about the safety of this tour.

DESCRIPCIÓN DEL TOUR

El punto de partida es un pequeño parqueadero en la carretera de grava E182 (4150 m, desvío en el cartel "Volcán Chiles"), que conecta los pueblos de Tufiño y Chilma Alto y recorre el flanco sur del volcán. Un camino polvoriento conduce desde aquí por la derecha cuesta arriba hasta el refugio "Ángel Cerón" a 4250 m, que sólo puede ser dominado con un vehículo todoterreno 4x4. También hay una antena alta. Desde el refugio, manténgase a la izquierda y cruce el paisaje herboso y pantanoso, pasando por una pequeña laguna, hasta que el sendero suba abruptamente en serpentinas hasta la cresta de la montaña, que corre hacia el suroeste. Esta es normalmente la ruta de descenso, pero esta ruta también puede ser tomada para el ascenso; el camino normal continúa directamente desde el refugio. En la cima de la cresta el camino se hace más plano de nuevo. A la izquierda, una gigantesca hondonada de pedregullo con enormes rocas cae a dos lagunas. Aquí también se tiene una bonita vista de los picos del volcán Chile. El macizo de la cumbre está flanqueado por el lado derecho. Atención: hay mucha roca suelta, se recomienda un casco. La ruta está parcialmente marcada con hombres de piedra. Sin embargo, en la niebla a veces es difícil distinguir el rastro. Partiendo del flanco occidental, por encima de dos lagunas, la ruta desciende brevemente y luego vuelve a subir a través de la arena hasta el paso entre la cumbre secundaria al sur (con cruz y banderas) y la cumbre principal al norte (también con cruz de la cumbre). La cumbre secundaria (4650 m, a la izquierda) puede alcanzarse con relativa facilidad sobre la cresta rocosa (I. grado). El ascenso a la cumbre principal (4723 m, a la derecha) conduce sobre una chimenea con excelentes agarres en la roca sólida (II. grado, al principio un poco expuesta). El comienzo de la subida está marcado por una gran piedra con una grieta en el borde izquierdo. Desde la cumbre se tiene una hermosa vista del volcán Cumbal en Colombia y de las montañas de Ecuador (Cotacachi, Cayambe, Antisana). Es aconsejable hacer el descenso en el mismo lugar. El camino de vuelta sigue la misma ruta.

Nota: Debido a su ubicación en la frontera con Colombia, es aconsejable preguntar en Tufiño sobre la seguridad de este tour.

TOURENBESCHREIBUNG

Ausgangspunkt ist ein kleiner Parkplatz an der Schotterstraße E182 (4150 m, Abzweigung bei der Beschilderung "Volcán Chiles"), welche die Ortschaften Tufiño und Chilma Alto verbindet und entlang der Südflanke des Vulkans Chiles verläuft. Eine staubige Piste führt von hier rechts bergauf zur Schutzhütte "Ángel Cerón" auf 4250 m, die allerdings nur mit einem Allrad-Fahrzeug zu meistern ist. Dort steht auch eine hohe Antenne. Von der Schutzhütte halten wir uns nach links unten und durchqueren die Gras- und Moorlandschaft, vorbei an einer kleinen Lagune, bis der Pfad steil in Serpentinen auf den nach Südwest verlaufenden Bergrücken hinauf führt. Dieser Weg ist normalerweise die Abstiegsroute, diese Route kann allerdings auch für den Aufstieg genommen werden; der Normalweg führt von der Schutzhütte weiter gerade aus. Oben auf dem Bergrücken wird der Weg wieder flacher. Linker Hand fällt eine gigantische Schuttmulde mit riesigen Steinbrocken hinab bis zu zwei Lagunen. Hier hat man auch einen schönen Blick auf die Gipfel des Vulkans Chiles. Das Gipfelmassiv wird rechter Hand flankiert. Achtung: es hat viel loses Gestein, ein Helm ist empfehlenswert. Die Route ist teilweise markiert mit Steinmännchen. Allerdings kann bei Nebel die Wegspur teilweise nur schwer ausgemacht werden. Ausgehend von der Westflanke, oberhalb von zwei Lagunen, geht es kurz bergabwärts und dann wieder bergaufwärts durch Sand zum Pass zwischen dem Nebengipfel nach Süden (mit Kreuz und Fahnen) und dem Hauptgipfel nach Norden (auch mit Gipfelkreuz). Der Nebengipfel (4650 m, nach links) kann relativ leicht über den felsigen Grat erreicht werden (I. Grad). Der Aufstieg auf den Hauptgipfel (4723 m, nach rechts) führt über einen Kamin mit ausgezeichneten Griffen im festen Fels (II. Grad, am Anfang ein wenig ausgesetzt). Der Einstieg in die Kletterei markiert ein großer Stein mit einem Spalt am linken Rand. Vom Gipfel hat man einen schönen Blick auf den Vulkan Cumbal in Kolumbien sowie auf die Berge Ecuadors (Cotacachi, Cayambe, Antisana). Es ist ratsam, den Abstieg an der gleichen Stelle durchzuführen. Der Rückweg erfolgt über die gleiche Route.

Hinweis: Aufgrund der Lage an der Grenze zu Kolumbien ist es empfehlenswert, in Tufiño nach der Sicherheit dieser Tour nachzufragen.
