Itinerary description

A single day hike to the summit of Charquini, a peak that reaches 5300 meters. The starting point is the same area as the base camps of the famous Huayna Potosí (At the Zongo reservoir). You have to awkwardly follow an aqueduct until the valley climbing up to the summit is clear. There is a short stretch of glacier, so crampons are strongly recommended. There is probably a way to get to the summit without climbing the glacier, but you would have to get creative. The final push towards the top is a scramble with a lot of lose rocks. Impressive views of Illimani, Sirqi Qullu, Chacaltaya, Mururata, Huayna Potosí, Zongo Valley and Choro Valley can be had from the top. You can even see Lake Titicaca if you squint a little. A highly recommended hike for those looking to practice some technical mountaineering skills without having to be out multiple days.

Approaching the glacier

A tiny glacier with no serious risk of falling into a crevice or anything. Easy to get on. At the rate it's melting, it won't exist much longer.

Tricky scramble to get to the top. Watch out for loose rocks.
